PSP X8, X9, 2018 fails to release folder

Post by hartpaul »

This may be just me or it might apply to others.

1. Make two folders on your desktop (I called them PSPtest1 and PSPtest2) and loaded one image to each folder.

2. Open one of the above versions of PSP, and load an image from PSPtest1.
3. Save that image , and close the file so that your workspace is empty.
4. Try and delete your folder PSPtest1 - I get a message that the folder / file is still open in another program and to delete that folder I have to close PSP to be able to delete that folder.

This does not happen with earlier versions of PSP back to Jasc PSP8

It appears that PSP X8, X9 and 2018 still have hooks attached to the folder even if I open another folder and file. It still stops that first folder from being deleted.
Can anyone else reproduce this problem and is it a bug in PSP.

This occurs when I work with a number of folders and after processing files and saving them back to that folder and then moving them to another stoprage folder, I want to delete the first folder to clean up the desktop, but PSP will not let me do that.

Yes, I can confirm there is an issue with the folder not being released by PSP. I tested with version 2018 and I have noticed it with previous versions too.

You mentioned two test folders but you didn't say what you did with test folder #2.

I created two test folders and put an image in each.

Test #1

Opened image from test folder #1, made a change and performed a "save as" back to folder #1.

I then dragged folder #1 to the recycle bin with no issue.

Test #2

Opened image from test folder #1, made no changes and closed the image by clicking the X on the tab.

I then dragged folder #1 to the recycle bin and received the folder in use message.

click for larger view
I used Unlocker to view the issue and it clearly points to PSP.

Test #3

Opened image from test folder #1, made no changes and closed the image by clicking the X on the tab.

I then dragged folder #1 to the recycle bin and received the folder in use message.
click for larger view
click for larger view
Next I opened an image from test folder #2 and while the image was open I immediately went to my desktop and dragged folder #1 to the recycle bin with no issues.

At least in my experience opening an image from test folder #2 broke the link or hook to test folder #1.

Restarting Windows Explorer from the Task Manager can fix these kinds of problems.

Kathy_9 : You mentioned two test folders but you didn't say what you did with test folder #2.
Sorry about that . I was distracted testing other versions trying to verify when the problem first occurred.

I set up folder 2 so that after saving to Folder 1 and finding out that I could not delete folder 1, I opened folder 2 and loaded an image from there.
I would have thought that PSP would have then transferred its hooks to Folder 2, so making folder 1 safe to delete, but no it still was locked into folder 1 and would not allow that to be deleted.
After further testing I find that PSP transfers its hooks to the last folder used for a Save As. That folder cannot be deleted while you still have PSP open.
You can delete/move all the files in that folder but that folder remains hooked until you save an image into another different folder.

As I know most of the programs that I use do the same, lock folder/somethimes even file. It is perhaps a programmer view of problematic.. how programmer set FLAGS for some system functions... 8)

I had a feeling that's what you had in mind and that's why I tested that scenario. My results were a little different than yours in that I only had to open an image from test #2 to release the hook on test #1 folder; I didn't have to do a save as to folder test #2.

Thanks Kathy. I just retested
First loaded image from folder 1 and Save as and Folder 1 is now hooked.
loaded an image from folder 2 and did a Save
Folder 1 is still locked (in each case I highlighted and pressed the delete key and then the enter key.
However when I did a Save As to Folder 2 then the lock transferred to Folder 2 and Folder 1 was free to delete.

Okay, we are getting closer in our results but not 100%.

I too just retested and this time when I X'd out of the tabbed image instead of doing a 'save as' I get the 'folder in use' dialog box. Previously when I X'd out I was able to drag the folder to the recycle bin with no issue.

Opening a second folder continues to release the hook on the first folder so in that regard we are getting different results.

I wonder if this is related to differences between windows 7 and windows 10.
I will have to switch to windows 7 and check that out.
