Advice re PSP 8: 8.10 patch update

Post by terrypin »

A Win 10 update took place this morning, to version 1803 (17134.48). When I later started PSP 8, Win 10 then asked for my PSP 8 CD to find 'a feature' and it used that to 'configure PSP 8'. I did that successfully and this is what it now looks like, with Help > About displayed.

I'm wondering if this now needs updating with the '8.10 patch', psp810enp.exe? Could one of the few users who still have this ancient version advise please? The '8.10' seems to indicate the update is included so hopefully my hesitation is misplaced.

That is already showing it as 8.10/. The important question is does it work correctly for you?
If so then don't do anything cause you might break it.

Thanks, yes, it's working OK, but that's only been a short time so far. The update was around 14 years ago and I don't remember what it did. But maybe it included fixing bugs or design flaws in features that I won't notice for some time!

Whatever Win 10 did with the CD, it didn't change the size or date of C:\Program Files (x86)\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 8\Paint Shop Pro.exe, which remain at 5.62 MB (5,898,240 bytes) and 13th October 2003 respectively, identical to my last backup before the WU. Presumably it changed something in the registry?

My PSP 8.1 did the same thing after the 1803 Feature Update. If I recall, the same thing happened after 1709. I simply used the CD. PSP fetched info from the file it needed, and all was well. The other thing that happened after 1803 is that my computer wasn't able to view thumbnails in spite of resetting Folder Options several times. However, what the system seemed to need was a reboot after resetting. At this point PSP 8.1 and 2018 are working.

And isn't that amazing that Jasc could write a program back in 2003 that still operates 15 years later. They must have done something right.

I reckon it’s about time I made a backup of that CD.

And also work out how to copy it to my HD and point Win 10 at it when necessary.

I definitely agree with that sentiment! Even more so when you consider the different operating systems since then, and particularly how Windows 10 updates can screw things up for many programs and did so with PSP 8.1. Yet just by accessing that old code again PSP 8.1 was able to make itself compatible and working again.
