Anchoring Chapter/Cue Points

Post by tletter »

I use Chapter Points for it's 'Go To' capability to jump around a VSP. Perhaps there is a better way to jump around but "cue points" and "chapter points" seems to offer identical 'Go To' capability and neither is anchored to a clip or image.

Can Chapter Points or cue points be anchored to a clip or image so that they move when clips or images are inserted before them, i.e. like ripple editing works for items?

Thanks,

Actually, this is something which has always puzzled me about the Chapter points in the past. It would IMHO be beneficial if both the Chapter and Cue points could be added to the Ripple effect, or at least have an option to be included in the ripple.

As for the difference, the Chapter points I assume are still picked up when you burn the .vsp to a DVD or Blu-ray, but the Cue points won't be. I need to read the manual on this.

Currently, I don't tend to use them as they should be when I'm editing a video as it's too easy to mess with the timeline and their position becomes irrelevant. instead, I tend to add the briefly at a point where I want to align something and remove them after.

Yes that is correct, chapter points added to the timeline will be available to use when opening the burner module ( Share Disc)
We can also name the chapter points from Settings Chapter Points Manager, the names being retained, with the exception of a point placed at 00:00:00:00.
Rendering the project to Mpeg2 or AVCHD will embed the chapterpoints, details to be recovered when creating the menu, ( does not retain the names)

All in all it is probably as easy to set chapter points when using the burner not from the timelines.
Not often that i use chapters but rely on the Main / Title menu.

I guess it depends on how much additional time you want to spend when creating a disc and your workflow.

I know when I'm editing where the different parts are. It's quite easy to forget some when it comes to burning the disc.

Yes I know where the parts are but when the VSP is an hour long it's time consuming to move to the right spot for editing. Is there an efficient way to "Go To" locations other than by guess and by golly?

Is there a way to find a specific caption using something like text search in a word processor?

I am with you tletter. In VS 2018 there is more functionality now available with the markers. It would be beneficial if there were a few more features.

For the markers to be of more practical use it would be better if they could be rippled. All it takes is for a short 10 or 20 second piece to be added or removed in different places or an intro to be rejigged and they all get messed up.

As for finding captions, yes that is a bugbear. Perhaps something to be added to the wishlist would be "find & replace" and perhaps a spell checker too?

I've developed a habit of typing up captions in Word. I then use copy & paste. Errors still creep in.

Hi Guys

Yes interesting subject, the Cue and Chapter point markers have been around for many a year with little or no updates, although Chapters do now show with names in the menu.

The library now shows our clips with a green tick when used in our project, very useful, a right click gives some options, locate on computer, but a locate clip on timeline would be useful, I think.
Creating titles could also add that title to the library, although we can drag it there, again a right click could show “locate on timeline”

Even so the Cue points need associating with the actual clip and not the timeline timecode. No need for ripple editing.
We would mark a clip not the timeline, the green / blue arrow still showing at the top.
Right click any clip and choose mark clip, would place a cue point at the curser position, frame accurate and locked to the clip.

Just some ideas
