Replace clip with longer clip/ overlays out of sync

Hi. In the middle of Track 1, I want to replace Clip A with Clip B, which is 7 seconds longer than Clip A.

Once I replace Clip A, the overlays are 7 seconds behind.

What is the best way to move all the overlays, from the new clip to the end of the video, over 7 seconds?

Hi

There is a process called “Ripple Editing” that should keep the clips in sync, moving 7 seconds. (select the chain link to the left of timelines.)
Whether that is effective depends on your timelines content.
If you receive an error message relating to removing clips I would cancel, then move the clips by hand

We can select adjacent clips using Shift + Click, then drag the selection.
Placing a Chapter or Cue point at 7 seconds may help as dragging the clips may “snap to”

What are the steps for Ripple Editing to work here?

I think the problem I am having trying to understand is that, in this case, Ripple Editing involves both adding and deleting clips, not just one or the other.

Yes that is true Ripple Editing will adjust the timelines whether adding or removing clips.
It is not magic and can have its problems.

After applying ripple editing I would first add the new clip, check the clip positions are ok, then delete the old clip.
If that goes out of sync then you have no choice but to manually re-arrange the clips.

What I noticed when playing with Ripple Editing was when I wanted to delete the clip with Ripple Editing, a message came up saying that clips related to the clip to be deleted will be removed. I deleted the clip to see what was removed. I saw that 5 clips in the overlays were missing that were in the same part of the timeline as the deleted clip.

Knowing this, I inserted the new clip with RE enabled. I moved the 5 clips a bit further up the timeline, then deleted the old clip with RE enabled. Then all I had to do was line up the 5 clips under the new clip. The rest of the video was not affected.

Not sure if this is the easiest way, but it works.

I never had an issue with transitions.

And I did resolve my issue by moving the linked clips forward in the timeline, inserting the new clip, and deleting the old (see above). After that I just had to line up the 5 overlay clips again.
