Multi file copies
Hi all
Not Vs related, but I'm looking for a program that detects multiple copies of files over various drives. If anyone uses a program that they would recommend I would appreciate the info.
Thanks

Re: Multi file copies
Would not recommend that you go down that track, finding duplicate files then deleting them is fraught with danger, it can be done, but you really need to know what you are doing

Re: Multi file copies
I use a program named 'Locate32' which can find duplicates over all my drives (see image) instantaneously as it pre-builds a DB for each drive which are used for the searches. Personally I couldn't work effectively without it or something akin to it.alanball wrote:Not Vs related, but I'm looking for a program that detects multiple copies of files over various drives. Re: Multi file copies
Thanks for replies.
Thanks RobertOZ, I just want to locate multiple files, not delete them thanks, for the warning though. Both my wife and myself take photos and videos when traveling, or on special occations and unfortunatley we both share the same computer and external drives. My wife has a habit of moving her photos/videos I use in VS which could be projects I am still working on, so I need to locate these files and other copies.
Thanks tletter and asik1, I wil take a look at those options.
tletter I notice Locate32 has not been updated since 2012, does it still work for you on Win10 OK?
Thanks

Re: Multi file copies
Try using Glary Utilities. It will find all your duplicate files, list them, and give you the choice as to what you would like to do. It works really well, and it is free for the basic program.

Are you sure you need a duplicate file finder?
If your wife has moved files to another location and that has affected your project, requesting a re-link, then there are no duplicates, your wife has moved them not copied.
You may only need the search features within windows.
The re-link shows the name of the missing file and its last known location.
Search your pc for that file.
Unfortunately our cameras do eventually reuse file names creating images and video having the same name to older images. those can be confusing.
As a workround
Once you have added all clips to the timeline, some being your wifes files.
Use Video Studio to create a Smart Package, that will copy all files used in the project to a new folder, you now have your own copies of the project files.

Re: Multi file copies
Thanks tletter and Aprilrussell, for your input I wil look at both options to see which suits me best. I would be particulaly interested to see if I can print out results of searches.
Thanks for your comments lata, yes I agree there are work arounds. I have found in an old project I have gone back to do alterations, that when I have tried to link files I have located one file with file manager and found that only the one file will relink. I'm sure that in releases before 10, once one file was relink, all the other files in the same folder relinked automatically. I have not had the time to do tests yet, but thought that maybe if the vsp file was created in version 7, it would not relink in version 10. I will try again later.
Thanks again for all your input.

Re: Multi file copies
Hi Alan
If there are multiple clips in the same folder to be re-linked yet only one is used.
Close to save project then Open the VSP to will show the re-link option, do not cancel, follow the relink, that should now re-link all.
If you have to search for another folder and have the same issue, again close (save) and open the project.
If the individual files have been renamed then you would have to re-link one at a time.
