Adjusting Photos from Slides

Post by Aussie Perry »

G'day,
I have thousands of Kodak Slides that I am saving onto my computer & disks. They all have this blue contrast. What program would be best to obtain a more natural photo. I have PSP 2018 also After Shot.
Cheers Perry

I'm more familiar with PSP and my suggestion would be to try to correct the color tint by adjusting the white balance. Enhance Photo -> White Balance.

There are other methods but this is quick and easy and can be tweaked to your taste.

Hi Perry

1. The software for my (pretty ancient) Epson scanner has a setting for this called Colour Restoration. I presume you are using a scanner with a slide adaptor.

2. I use PSP X6 and the setting I use for this sort of problem is Adjust->Color->Fade Correction.

Same as Tony Lenton :

- Adjust / Color / Fade correction : 100
- and over the previous correction, I made the White balance Warmer (7720) (Kathy's suggestion) :

But values need to be modified if color cast differs.

I tried it with Perfectly Clear 3 Complete. It didn't do the job nearly as well as a combination of Fade Correction and White Balance-Warmer. And I did it in Perfectly Clear trying several filters and adjustments. So if it could do the job as well as the above combination then it likely would take a lot more effort than the combo described by Jean-Luc, at least from my attempts. And this is coming from a user who actually likes how well Perfectly Clear works swiftly with basic image issues like lack of contrast, tint issues, and faded color issues when most of those are not extreme but just issues that most people regularly encounter with their general candid shots.

I tried Darkening the image a bit first(Brightness - 20) then Fade Correction (70) and then Red/Green/Blue correction (R+3, G+6, B-20).

Your RGB correction is interesting. It acts like in the past with color enlarger and additive filters (I have worked on a "Durst" machine with such filters). Memories... :)

Yes, if color cast is not extreme, it could do the job... Thank you. :)

You are absolutely right, I got an Epson V500 photo and the scanner software is absolutely marvelous to correct the photos but you have to learn hos it works, but after you will do miracle with your slide
