Difficulty with fade in from black
Why am I having such difficulty finding out how to start a video with a simple fade in from black? I've not found anything specific about this other than one convoluted way to do it with an old version. The only fade in information I can find in v2018 is for audio. That's fine, but this is a video product. MovieStudio, now owned by Magix, had a very simple and quick way to do it. I'm pleased with Corel VideoStudio, but this issue confounds me.

Re: Difficulty with fade in from black
Add a black image, set length as needed. Add opening resource then place Fade to Black or Cross Fade transition between them (click the AB icon, click the droplist arrow then select the desired transition).
Or just add a Cross Fade at the beginning of the first resource.
Or use Custom Motion tool on the first resource and use the Opacity function.

Re: Difficulty with fade in from black
You can find the black colour clip in VS itself. Have a look at the attached image. The red arrow points to what you click on first. Then when the Samples window opens, click on Color as per the green arrow. That also points to the first clip in that library (0,0,0 which is black) though it doesn't show up against the black background. However, it is there and you just drag it to the beginning of your project and adjust its length to whatever you want. I usually then add a crossfade transition between its end and your first video clip in the project to complete the fade from black effect.
