ALT-F, S does not always pop up "Save As" dialog

Post by iraisok »

If you use shortcut keys to bring up the “Save As…” dialog and press hold “ALT followed by quickly pressing “S” notice below that the “A” in “Save As…” is NOT underlined. The “Add Info” dialog appears instead of the “Save As” dialog. Even when the A in Save As appears underlined, the “Add Info” dialog pops up instead of the “Save As” dialog. At times, pressing the sequence slowly presents the “A” underlined in “Save As” and the Save As dialog opens.

Summary, most of the time when you press ALT-F S, it pops up the Add Info dialog, an option lower in the File Pull-Down menu instead of the Save As dialog.

I must be missing something.. Save As is F12, much quicker than using shortcut keys :-)

If you notice the menu does not have "s" underlined in that screenshot. Which means that shortkey won't work. There is a way to fix that of you want but as Joelle said F12 is all you need.

I also find this very confusing.
Starting "if you use shortcut keys to bring up the Save As dialog" As mentioned F12 is the shortcut key for Save As. Then you get the Save As dialog which is this in my case:
01SaveAs Dialog.jpg
Your post shows the File choices not a dialog box.

Alt S brings up the Selections drop down, S alone gets the Selection tool. You can check all the command shortcut keys through Help > Keyboard Map

"Even when the A in Save As appears underlined, the “Add Info” dialog pops up instead of the “Save As” dialog."

I cannot see that at all.
Can you detail the steps you do that brings up that Add Info

Are you sure you are not confusing the Alt A and underlined A shortcut keys with some other program or an earlier version of PSP. I note the A in Save As is underlined in Jasc PSP 8 and was dropped in PSPX7.

hartpaul - they are referring to menu shortcuts not hotkeys or keyboard shortcuts. It's not Alt + F or Alt + A. It's Alt, and then F and then A as a way of navigating the menus vs simply calling up the command you want.

So, I was surprised to discover that although they are not showing the underlines anymore they do still work. Here is a quick video showing how to change the menu shortcuts.

Levi - Thank you for sharing the above link.

Joelle - Thank you for pointing out that I could more easily press F12. I probably will do so. What you are missing is - If a person is accustom to a command sequence that is common AND used in multiple programs that perform the SAME FUNCTION, they are likely to stick with it. Point in question - ALT-F A for SAVE AS. Yes, I will start to use F12 or change assignment for Add Information BUT again, when I did SEE the "A" underlined and then I did not and hardly ever had the Save As dialog open, I thought it odd. Nope, I was NOT missing anything.

I really like PSP and amazed at all the tweaks and features it has. It's a great companion to Pinnacle Studio 21 Ultimate and things I create. They are both Pro-sumer cousins.

Thanks all for the quick replies everyone.

Edit for today:
While all options and methods presented are valid and useful, you gotta agree that assigning the SAME shortcut key to different choices is a no no that, at least during my personal s/w development years and for EVERY other program I have used has NEVER been done. So, for Corel to allow this to be released as such is WRONG. Yep, they also provide the tools for users to change things as they wish but come now, it's wrong. See 'Save As' and 'Add Info' in the attachment I just added that shows the entire File menu pull-down.

Now I'm done!
