It's a live camera feed. The camera itself is stuck at the top of a tower at Chichester Cathedral.

The screen capture is creating 640x480 WMV files (I've framed it around the VLC video. The source is 640x480, I checked some time back.

The files are being recorded onto a hard drive. On the spare laptop, they were being recorded to the internal drive, but I now suspect it is failing. Currently, it's recording to an external drive.

I was trying to upload the files, once saved, through Dropbox. This seems to be putting too much load on the laptop, so I'm going to have to try something else. The current plan is to use a second external drive, copy the files to that drive, then continue with the recording on it.

VLC has the ability to record a stream to file, which I'm currently testing on my main laptop. It has a few issues though. I can't see what it's recording for one and I have to manually create a new filename with each fresh clip.

Hi Scubbie
Sorry for delay in my reply…Now that makes sense, I had a bit of trouble accessing the Chichester Cathedral site, no idea why?. Maybe my browser type?
Today it seems to be working ok, maybe a different URL, I assume it’s the peregrines you are looking at.
Given time I will try capturing from remote web cams, no idea as where to start other than VLC

Thank you Trevor.

As this is going to end up running for a good couple of weeks I had a little more play over the past couple of days. The old laptop keeps having problems which I don't seem to be able to address at the moment. What I have done though is to try out the VLC save & capture option. After a lot of playing around with the settings, I've managed to get something useful to work on my main laptop.

The advantage of doing it this way means that I don't get the laptop's system sounds, or any others, interrupting the audio. The disadvantage is automation. I'm having to guess the best time to stop recording one file and start a new one. It's taking me around 30 seconds (guessing) to get the new one started, but it's always a worry as some of those twitchers out there might be upset.

The screen capture with VS automatically increases the numbers for each file and this can make it easier to sort through them. I'm having to do this manually with VLC and keep each recording to less than 10 hours (VS max!).

I had thought that I'd set VLC to record 30 fps, but I guess that the stream is at 14.97fps as this is what the recordings are defaulting to. Ok, this means slightly smaller files, but could be the cause why VS keeps crashing on me today (swear words aplenty). Thinking this through, I wonder if I should make the switch to VS X10.5 to see if it resolves the issue there.

Yesterday's footage appears to be the most complete so far, which is a good sign. I'm still capturing today's ;).

I too am trying to eliminate hum from a video. And when I use the NewBlue Hum Reducer in the audition window I can hear it working. But when I go back to the timeline it is not working. I tried splitting the audio from the video with no difference. Am I missing a step?

Welcome to the forum!

After you apply the New Blue filter, are you playing back in Clip mode or Project mode (using the buttons directly below the preview screen)? You will only hear the audio with the filter working if you play back in Project mode. If in Clip mode, the playback is of the original audio without the application of the filter.

As Ken has suggested, do make sure that you are playing the project, not the clip.

Also, check that you have adjusted the settings for the hum. The default is for a 60Hz source. In my case, it was a 50Hz source and the default options for the 50Hz are working reasonably well in my case, but I needed to select them.

I'm also using both the NB Hum Remover and NB Audio Polish (in that order) to help clean up the sound. Sometimes they work perfectly, other times the sound is left a little metallic. If you turn up the volume, the original hum is still there, but much depressed.
