Re: VS Pro2018 .MOV Audio
No real problems using that Mov with 2018 or X9
Using X9 did not show messages, to be expected as Mov cannot be used for PP.
2018 however showed Show Messages with program seeing video as mpeg4, which of course Mov and Mpeg4 are very similar.
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1280 x 720, 23.976 fps
Frame-based
H.264 Baseline Profile Video: 19777 Kbps, 16:9
48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
LPCM Audio: 768 Kbps
For those who wish to view this video.
A little strange that 2018 sees this as Mpeg4, I suppose good in a way.

Re: VS Pro2018 .MOV Audio
Hello All,
Corel Support says I need to update my sound driver but if that was the case, you all wouldn't be having the same issue with VSPro2018. So, what do I do? How do I update my sound driver? Corel says I should contact them after doing so. I checked and my latest DirectX is 12. Isn't that the latest version?
Oh and I checked to see if there was an update for my Realtek audio driver and Windows says that's the best for my device. So....?
Bernadette

Report back to Corel Support you have the latest drivers, and get them to insert your cloud drive video in their timeline to reproduce what we have gotten here. Have they done that?

Hi
I agree it is a strange problem that the program is experiencing.
On Tuesday I passed the post details on to our Corel contacts, I have not had a reply.

Hello Al and Trevor,
I did go back to Corel Support and shared the link to the sample video. I don't know if they will take action but it's a good idea and once again, a waiting game.
Thanks,
Bernadette

I could not get VS 9 to detect the audio track. I have no idea why.
If you convert your camera output to MP4, you'll have to re-render at least your audio stream, because MP4 is not compatible with PCM audio.
If I ran into this problem, I would instead use FFmpeg to convert my videos to MKV without re-rendering, i.e., the same audio and video streams in a different container. When I did this with your sample clip, my version of VS handled it fine. Yours might too.
If it does, you can convert an entire folder of clips quickly and easily. You need a one-line batch file as follows:
for %%a in ("*.mov") do ffmpeg -i "%%a" -vcodec copy -acodec copy "%%~na.mkv"
Do you want me to walk you through the process of testing this and setting it up?

Re: VS Pro2018 .MOV Audio
Hi Bernadette
Until Corel fix this problem, and I hope they do then you have no choice than to convert the video to another format. Like you I have not had a reply.
Other than using CVSX8, I do not have a problem using the cat sample and X8.????
I would take up Charles with his offer to show you FFmpeg, especially doing a batch convert, certainly I would be interested as I have never used that software.
Charles, your mention of MKV prompted me to rename the sample to use MKV extension, a bit of an improvement in that I can hear audio, but distorted every 5 seconds or so?
Already tried renaming to MP4, no go there.

Re: VS Pro2018 .MOV Audio
Hi Charlie,
Yes, Max Canada Lynx is my 7 year old animal ambassador who has a decent following on YouTube. I've been using Prism software to convert my MOV videos without incident. I dislike the fact that I have to take an extra step & convert before using VS. Thankfully, I don't use my old camera too often. I was told that VLC Media Player will convert but I haven't tried that software. I will double check my conversion as you suggested.
Trevor,
At least I know that I'm not the only one being ignored by Corel!
Thanks!
Bernadette

Re: VS Pro2018 .MOV Audio
File converters are the easy way to go, but if they re-render from one lossy codec to another, you get at least some loss of quality that may or may not matter.
Some file converters cost money as well.
FFmpeg is free. It can handle specific, unusual situations, and this is a case in point.
HOWEVER... it works at the command line, so you have to open one of those bleak looking console windows and type in a command, just like DOS from 30 years ago. That puts a lot of people off.
Another point... you have to use Windows File Explorer to navigate the various folders on your hard drive, create/rename folders, and examine their contents. That's really the tricky part of all this - getting the folders and files set up. But it is a one-time nuisance. Once it's done, it's done. You end up with something that is fast and convenient.
So, for anyone who is interested, here's what you do:
Go to:
https://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/
Watch out for the trick links and click "download build".
Find the .zip file in your download folder, right-click, and extract the contents. You end up with a folder with a sub-folder having the same name. Shorten the name of the sub-folder to ffmpeg and copy it to C:\Program Files
I recommend you create a desktop shortcut for your command shell. Go to Windows\System32, right click cmd.exe and drag it onto your desktop. Choose "create desktop shortcut."
I have a batch file called fff.bat in my Windows\System32 folder. It consists of one line as follows:
cd C:\Program Files\ffmpeg\bin
It's merely a shortcut to direct my command shell to my FFmpeg folder, so I don't have to type the full command.
For Bernadette's situation, I would create a folder on my C drive called "camera" for my camera files. I would create a subfolder called "matroska".
I would use Notepad to create a one line batch file as follows:
for %%a in ("C:\camera\*.mov") do ffmpeg -i "%%a" -vcodec copy -acodec copy "C:\camera\matroska\%%~na.mkv"
These batch file names can be anything, but mm.bat is a good choice for this one.
Copy mm.bat to C:\Program Files\ffmpeg\bin
NOTE: You can't edit\save text files in system folders. You have to create them somewhere else, but you can paste them in by clicking through the "administrator permission" prompt.
Once you have all the pieces in place, you can import camera files to the target folder ("C:\camera"), open the console window, type "fff", and then type "mm". FFmpeg will convert every MOV file and create new MKV files in the sub-folder, without deleting the originals.
You can edit the MKV files in VS.
Since FFmpeg is not re-rendering, the conversion is fast and involves no loss of quality.

Re: VS Pro2018 .MOV Audio
Hi Charles
Thanks for the info on FFmpeg
I have not used the Command Prompt, a bit scary, but I did manage to install FFmpeg.
Took a while to get my head around the CP.
I was unsure if I had downloaded the correct package so visited VideoHelp, there I found a link to a FFmpeg converter https://sourceforge.net/projects/ffmpeg-batch/
Anyway a bit more user friendly, at least for me.
Then you posted here giving me more confidence the shortcuts certainly smoothed the way.
I had mixed results with the cat video converting without problems.
But using one of my Mov although converted, video studio did not like with a warning of no video content.
I have not had chance to check that out nor try other formats, only MP4 and MKV, given a little time I will get back to it, try to get more proficient.
I was very surprised at the speed that the FFmpeg converted the files, very fast, almost instantaneous.

Re: VS Pro2018 .MOV Audio
I'm old enough to have used DOS, editing batch files for games etc. Shell scripting has become vastly more complicated since that time, but some of the basics are the same, so I'm not put off by a blinking cursor in a console window.
FFmpeg is the fast way to go if you have a dozen files you need to process.
The reason it's so fast in this particular situation is because it is not transcoding, merely remuxing the existing video and audio streams in a different media container.
I provided a conversion that I think will work with VS. If I was working with this camera output I would want to preserve the video stream without re-rendering it, but I would transcode the audio to AAC, so I could convert to MP4 instead of MKV. The basic command for that is:
ffmpeg -i cat.mov -vcodec copy -acodec aac cat.mp4
The other thing about FFmpeg is that you can copy the executable into your working folder and it will work there. You can rename it and it will work under the new name. It doesn't intimidate for long, once you start to use it.
I'm seeing a number of conversion problems here, ranging from 10-bit HEVC to this legacy AVC/PCM combination. Waiting for VS developers could be a long wait... but the tools are available for those who don't want to wait, don't want to upgrade hardware, and don't want to buy a new/different/more expensive license.

Hi All,
Corel has gotten back to me with their solution:
"Thank you for contacting Corel Customer Support. I would suggest you to remux the file with freemake and check if it works for you and let me know if you have issues so that I can assist you better. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any further questions."
I thank you all for your support and although I do have to convert, at least I know that I'm not crazy in that the software is deficient.
Best,
Bernadette

Re: VS Pro2018 .MOV Audio
Yeah, Corel will probably not fix this, but any file conversion program will get the job done without noticeable loss of quality.
I watched some of your Youtube videos. That is an amazing cat you have there. It looks like you have spared no effort to provide him with a cushy set-up. It's good for people to see videos like that, so they realize what is involved with an exotic pet. He's pretty exotic, and BIG!
