Project size does not calculate correctly...

Post by Number9 »

Well, yet another wasted few hours making a DVD that DVDWS told me would take 3.5GB and discovering (once it had spent an hour multiplexing and converting) that it stopped at the burn part because the project was actually far too big for the disc!

Does anyone else's do this or am I doing something wrong? None of my project sizes report correctly so it's all guesswork, frustratingly!

There may be a number of reasons, although errors > 0.1 to 0.2 Gb are rare. If you go by the figure in Edit, I think this applies only to the video and does not count the space taken by menus, extra sound, sub-titles etc, which can add up to a considerable sum.

In the actual burn mode, where it tells you both HDD and DVD requirements and availability, I would assume this would be more accurate.

What you do not say is whether the hiccup is due to DVD or HDD. If you ask for an ISO or video on HDD, you need HDD space where you have specified it of >2 times the actual DVD size, once for the temp files and once for the ISO/video. If you ask for both, count over 3 x the DVD size.

Thanks Devil,

The problem is with the DVD disc - often it will tell me in the 'Finish' screen that the size is 4.1GB or even 3.7GB but once it's finished multiplexing, it spits the disc out and tells me that there's not enough space. So then I have to go back and ask it to re-encode the audio or something to claw a few MB back. Sadly I can't tell how much I need to get back so I've even done this twice or three times for some projects.

Slightly annoying!

But thanks for the explanation of why the 'Finish' total is always higher than the 'Edit' total!
