VS ultimate2018 eventually crashes when customizing pan/zoom
After loading a project with mostly photos and a bit of video, after about an hour VS 2018 crashes when I click OK after customizing pan zoom. I know the crash is coming because I get a spinning circle over the OK button. Sometimes my monitor goes black and the computer freezes, sometimes I get a message about insufficient memory and can exit VS 2018, sometimes the VS 2018 EDIT screen appears and I can exit VS 2018. BUT usually, the screen goes black and I have to push and hold the computer power button down to get the computer to shut off. VS 2018 does this whether I am listening to Pandora (only other item loaded) or with nothing else loaded. Very frustrating. I know I dont have a memory problem because my computer is a quad core with 12GB.

Re: VS ultimate2018 eventually crashes when customizing pan/
It appears that some limit is being reached from your description. How large is your project? What are the resolutions of your photos? How large are the video clips and their resolutions? Total length of the project in minutes?
You might consider breaking up the project in smaller pieces and then having the final project putting it all together to get it done while we can help figure out the problem.

Re: VS ultimate2018 eventually crashes when customizing pan/
The project is about 53 minutes. The photos are about 750K resolution per. There are 3 video clips totaling about 2 1/2 minutes and they are not hd res. I created projects in VS x7 of lengths around 62 minutes without ever encountering a problem and that was on a computer with only 4GB of memory. What makes this situation such a puzzle is that it is only when I click on the OK button after customizing pan/zoom that this happens. And there seems to be nothing unique that I am doing to cause it. All other features of VS 2018 seem to work fine. Even tho the project is not complete, as a test I rendered an mpg (mpeg2) file with no problem. After the display freezes and I manually power the computer down and then restart it, VS 2018 fires back up and works like a charm for a while. What I have been doing is doing a file save after just a few pan/zoom customizations. Then when VS crashes, I dont lose everything. The last 2 times it has happened, I have also been listening to Pandora. The screen does black, the music stops for about 2 seconds, then it starts to play again with a black screen. As to a limit being reached, that makes sense but I have no idea what it would be because I have 12GB of memory and I am unaware of any limits internal to VS 2018. I am hoping that someone else has encountered this problem and discovered a solution.

Re: VS ultimate2018 eventually crashes when customizing pan/
Hi
There are two Pan and Zoom options, one from the FX filters, (Video Pan & Zoom) I assume you are using the one from the timelines?
The out of memory error message for me has been very confusing to say the least.
I am not sure that the wording is correct.
There have been other reports in the past that seems to indicate the length of our image names may be an issue.
The number of characters in the full address being an issue.
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio 2018\Samples\Image\SP-I03.jpg
May be ok
Where as a long name
C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio 2018\Samples\Image\sunset Image from Australia and new Zealand-IMG_01579525.jpg
May cause problems.
are the images on the main pc HD or on external drive?
If you have images with long names can you try renaming, maybe create a copy to test this out.?
As for Pan & Zoom
I am having some issues making the first effect stick as set, I have to repeat my settings again till I get the correct effect.
Needs more tests?

Re: VS ultimate2018 eventually crashes when customizing pan/
I do not use the pan/zoom filter(s). I double click the photo on the timeline and customize from there. All my photos are on my hard drive. Since the problem is intermittent, it might be caused because of a long file name. The odd part tho is that when the screen goes black and I go thru the process of shutting down and restarting, I start right back with the photo that I was working on when the problem occurred and all is well for a time. The only difference is that VS 2018 has been cleared from memory due to the restart and then reloaded clean. Yesterday it crashed with no spinning circle on the OK button when accepting the customization of pan/zoom. I clicked OK, the cursor arrow remained, and then the screen went black. I am going to start keeping a log and count of photos between crashes. Based on your suggestion, I will also track the name of the photo. I am not a techie when it comes to the complexity of how computers work, but it almost seems like some confusion in VS2018 itself - a conflict of memory addresses causing processing confusion OR an intermittent conflict between VS 2018 and some other software present in memory. I never had this prob in VS X7, but I was using Windows 7 then.

Hi
I know long file names/ long addresses have been discussed in the past, I ran a test yesterday re-naming file names but was unable to replicate your crash, so maybe on the wrong track there.
When you say it goes black, is that Video Studio or your desktop / windows 10.
I had a lot of issues with Windows 10 crashing to a black screen, old pc with non supported graphics, not had a problem since I upgraded the pc.
If its Windows that’s closing then I would suspect your graphics drivers. Not what you wished to hear.
other thoughts...
Your images, I assume Jpeg can be saved as Baseline or Progressive, right click an image from library, properties, what shows on JPEG tab – encoding mode.
Normal is Baseline but if Progressive could cause issues?

Re: VS ultimate2018 eventually crashes when customizing pan/
When the monitor goes black, I dont know whether it is VS or Windows 10. When it happens there is no cursor, and old reliable ALT, Ctrl, Delete will not bring up task manager. However, if I am listening to Pandora, it will shut off for about 2 seconds then keep playing the song with the monitor black. This is a new Lenovo pc with AMD Radeon R7 Graphics and I have had no problems with Windows when using other programs or any time when on the net. As to the jpeg files, I have right clicked a typical photo file and cannot find anywhere or within any tabs where the encoding mode is displayed. If a graphics driver problem, it seems like it would happen while doing other things in VS 2018 too, ie, while working with audio or titles or adding files to the library or the myriad of other VS tasks. It only happens when I click the OK button to OK my customization of the pan/zoom. If there is a way to OK the pan/zoom customization without clicking the button, I would try that. Is there a way to know if Windows is crashing or whether it is VS ?

Re: VS ultimate2018 eventually crashes when customizing pan/
Trevor, on another matter you surfaced regarding pan/zoom "not taking." This may be old info for you, but I was having a similar problem when I first started using VS 2018 a few weeks ago. I had used the FX filter for pan/zoom on some photos to see what it was like. It moved too fast for my taste, so I tried to use customize pan/zoom to change it. No matter how many times I tried to change it, it would not change. I happened to be clicking around and at the top of the customization pan/zoom area were 3 tabs - EDIT, CORRECTION, EFFECT. This looked different from VS x7. I clicked on EFFECT and it showed a list of filters for that photo. I "x'd" the FX filter for pan/zoom, the re-customized pan/zoom for the photo, and it worked. I had to do this for each photo that I had used the FX filter for before the photo would take my customization effort. Other than for instances like that, my manual customization always works. If you dont use the FX pan/zoom filter this will not be applicable to you but you might see if there is something in the list in the EFFECT tab that might be causing your pan/zoom to not take.

Re: VS ultimate2018 eventually crashes when customizing pan/
Hi
Sorry missed your comment regarding Windows crashing or VS
You can try checking the Event Viewer, maybe the Windows Logs – Application should show the program crashes.
Dont know much about this, others on the forum may help regarding identifying windows / program crashes?
You should try re-installing 2018, use the cleanup tool to remove the program, you may be best to also uninstall your older program X7, although maybe best to install 2018 only.
If you need X7 then install first, update, then install 2018 last.
Your projects made with 2018 wont work using X7, certainly the Pan and Zoom has been updated for 2018 and not compatible to X7, so is there any point installing both?
As for Pan and Zoom, there are some issues identified during beta testing that it appears have not been fixed.

Re: VS ultimate2018 eventually crashes when customizing pan/
unfortunately, have already done an uninstall and re-install of VS2018 using the cleanup tool. I hoped that would work, but was doubtful. It did not fix the problem. I will do some checking regarding the crash logs to see if that sheds light on what is crashing. Good tip. I have not uninstalled VSx7 but have been thinking about doing that. As to clicking on the OK button and then the problem happens, I found that pressing ENTER key rather than clicking on OK after customizing pan/zoom works. So I will try pressing ENTER and see if that stops the crashes. It seems very unlikely that it will but who knows - worth a try. I keep hoping that COREL is working on a patch or even a version update and are just being quiet about it, not wanting to admit some of us are having various and sundry probs with pan/zoom.

Can you try to reproduce your problem with a small number of your photos and then share the project in a cloud drive so we can try to reproduce it, please?

Re: VS ultimate2018 eventually crashes when customizing pan/
To aljimenez - I am trying to finish the large project I have been working on. I worked on titles and audio today with many drag and drops and many re-customizations to pan/zoom. I also had 2 other software programs and the internet sitting idle that I would load and idle as needed. Rather than click on OK while customizing pan/zoom, I pressed the ENTER key. No crash in over 4 hours of working. Once this project is completed, I will try and create a test project and get a failure crash and then try to get it to a place to share it. I will keep the unedited base project and do the same steps again to see if it crashes at the same place. With the intermittent nature of this problem, I will be surprised if it fails in the same place - but who knows. Trevor, in this thread, has had problems with pan/zoom and I am wondering if in fact, there are some hickups in the pan/zoom process that Corel has not fixed. Refer to Trevors comment about beta problems.

Re: VS ultimate2018 eventually crashes when customizing pan/
Hi
Just to explain, I was on a long holiday 35 days, during that time the latest patch was released,
I did not know what had been fixed with that patch till my return,
I have only had the patch installed for just over a week, testing your pam & zoom I noticed an extra key frame being added to the left of the last keyframe. This was a known issue and not addressed so far.
Even so I have not had any crashes with the program, and believe me I have tried all I can to make the program crash?
Post updated
There are two ways to open Pan and zoom
1 / from the options panel – Pan & Zoom – Customize, seems to default to Static
2 / from the timeline icon, to the left of T3D – this seems to use On the Fly
which option are you using? i assume the options - Customize

Re: VS ultimate2018 eventually crashes when customizing pan/
OK, not exactly sure what the options panel is (ie 1 / from your post) - but I agree with you as to the defaults being either Static or On the Fly exactly as you describe. I wish these defaults could be changed to my taste.
To explain exactly what I do -- I do not use the timeline icon adjacent to T3D very often - almost never due to the On the Fly pre-set. Rather, I use a modified "options" panel approach. Once I have photos loaded to the timeline, I select all of them. I right click and in the drop down box that appears, I left click Auto Pan and Zoom. VS 2018 then does panning and zooming for every photo randomly. If I add photo(s) later I usually do the same thing. I seldom like what VS has chosen for pan/zoom (ie, too slow, too random for the story I am trying to tell, or the area of the photo I really want to highlight is ignored). Therefore, I then click or double click the photo on the timeline (depending on whether the pan/zoom option panel is visible), which takes me to the customization option. When I choose customize, the pan/zoom panel is Animated. I then make the adjustments I want. It is when I click OK to leave the panel that sometimes the monitor goes black OR the "insufficient memory" message pops up OR I get a spinning circle over the OK button (which then usually gives me one more chance to SAVE or exit VS in the normal fashion). In most instances, the screen has just goes black and the computer freezes. Another reason I use this method is that when VS does the pan/zoom, many times I just adjust the start box or the end box - dont have to adjust both because I like one or the other already. It could be that this process confuses VS sometimes and causes the crash. Seems like if it is available to use, the VS developers should have allowed for it.

Re: VS ultimate2018 eventually crashes when customizing pan/
Hi
First the options panel is the library view showing the Edit, Corrections and Effects tab
The one that shows after double clicking clips. This panel has been modified for 2018, I would prefer it to open in full by default rather than split, personal opinion
We can open Pan and Zoom from the timeline icon or Options panel Pan & Zoom, seems to open the same panel but users have found some subtle differences.
You are using a different option in right click selection, Auto Pan & Zoom.
I wonder if applying to multiple clips is causing the memory error?
Even so I would not expect a black screen.
Another option to apply to all would be Copy and Paste Attributes
Apply P&Z to first clip, then select all, Copy and Paste Attributes to all.
Have you had any more failures using Enter rather than mouse click?
