How to create greyscale graduations

Post by omsbsd »

Hello
I want to create a greyscale graduation over an area of a picture.
I have tried using a 25% hardness brush with limited success but I am trying to create a gradual increase in 'greyness' over a longer 'distance'.
Consider the image I have included (taken from elsewhere) to demonstrate what I am trying to achieve. I have also included the image before the author added the greyscale.
Is there an easy method to do this?
Thanks

You may use the Paint brush with different values of grey, with different Opacity and variation of Hardness.
Your image doesn't show what you want to do.

I have found what you want to do almost impossible, a gradual change in tone without seeing abrupt changes. One way to get that is to set up a gradient in the materials palette and then apply that either with a brush or with gradient fill (one of the options under fill in X9 and PSP2018, not X7). However, that would be very difficult to get that gradient from and irregular border such as you show. Using paintbrush the gradient applies over the whole canvas so that even if use create a selection different portions of the gradient are applied in different parts of the canvas.

Try -
Create a new raster layer on the top.
On that raster layer draw a border around the subject with the freehand selection tool.
Then with the airbrush and low opacity gradually spray in you grey tones.

Can you correct your original post - the link needs to go between the two img tags so when you edit it it should look like this :
"[img] link here [img] "
and the link - "download/file.php?id=10381&mode=view"

You may apply a Gaussian blur which makes a gray gradient.
