Noobie tries to use Dodge/Burn... Fails... PSP 2018

Post by Telorast »

I just got PSP 2018 got stuck right away. :P
Layers, Dodge & Burn are all new to me. I watched some of the tutorials & decided to try Dodge, but nothing happened. I'll tell you what didn't work hoping you'll tell me the right way to do it.
I duplicated the picture & then made a raster layer. Set the rester layer opacity to 50% & set to it Overlay. Set the color to HTML #808080 as rec'd in tutorial. Chose the Dodge brush & started going over the area. Absolutely nothing happened. Changed to Burn & nothing happened there, either. BUT, if I used Dodge or Burn directly on the Duplicate pic without the layer, it worked fine.

What am I doing wrong? Are Dodge & Burn not meant to be used on a layer?

Can you provide a link to the tutorial and also the step where you are having problems.

Also can you provide a cropped screenshot of your smaller scaled image near the Layers palette so we can see what layers you have, what layer is active and a description of what you are trying to do there.
From the sounds of your description you have 3 layers , a transparent? top layer and two duplicated image layers below and you are trying to dodge / burn on that top transparent layer???

You have to have some image material on the layer-

Ohhh... Success! Blushing but happy...
With that clue I went back through the tutorial, stopping at every step. I seem to have missed the part about flood-filling the raster layer before setting it to overlay. Posting the pic & a few of the screenies. (Used this tutorial: https://learn.corel.com/tutorials/enhan ... dge-tools/)

I downsized some of the pics. What is a good size for posting?

Thought this goat was a good candidate for testing Dodge & Burn-- lots of over-exposed & under-exposed areas. If it's salvageable, I'd love to do subtle highlights around the edges of his beard.

Definitely needs improvement. :P I'm not even sure that Dodge is the best approach, but at least I know how to do it now. Any suggestions will be appreciated
