VideoStudio Crashes

Ok I have been editing videos fine until the below video. I have VideoStudio 2018 Ultimate. '

So the videos I was editing fine have the following properties after I rendered and exported it.

MPEG-4 Movie (was avi) , 4.32GB - Frame 1920/1080, 30fps, bitrate total 13,303kbps

MPEG-4 Movie (was avi) , 2.10GB - Frame 1280/720, 30fps, bitrate total 7050kbps

Video I am trying to edit now is coming from a Canon Rebel SL2. These are the properties of that video I am trying to edit, but crashes as soon as its in timeline and I click anything.

MPEG-4 Movie - 563MB Frame 1920/1080 - 59fps - Bitrate 59,802kbs length 1min 20 sec


Corel is supposed to be able to do 60fps right? Why am I crashing with my awesome new camera??

Don't know why is crashing; I have done 1080p60 videos from my Panasonic cameras. Here are some questions and some ideas.

What is your project setting? I would make sure the project setting is the same as the video just to test.

Can you play the video in Windows Media Player? (the file may have some corruption)

Can you try a small video clip sample from the camera to see if it works. If it fails, share this small sample in a cloud drive so we can try it in our installation.

I can play it in windows media player. Corel asks if i want the project setting to match the video for smart render and I have said both yes and no to test and it still crashes once I try to edit.

I will try to take another video clip and test it out.

Also, just tested the file to edit in Movie Maker and it works fine. soooooooo not sure why it's making corel crash once editing

When you say the frame rate is 59 fps, can you give the exact figure, please? I ask since VS has difficulties with frame rates which do not match international standard rates. In the 59 fps range, that would be 59.94 fps, though that is often called 60 fps. If it is another rate, though beginning with 59, then VS is probably seeing it as a variable frame rate. In such case we usually recommend people use a video converter program like the freeware Handbrake or FormatFactory to convert it to an mp4 with identical properties but the standard 59.94/60 fps. That usually works...

It is already an MP4 as all canon are recorded as MP4. I will check the fps again and get back asap! Keep bring the tips please lol

ok so here are two snapshots of the video properties once in corel and also what corel asks when I drop in timeline. I have tried both options and it still crashes. I will get a video sample today for you all to help meeeeee!

Ok I made a brand new video and it still crashes in corel once in timeline and I click something. So it is not just the one video. I am uploading the new video I took just as a random video sample. It works fine in every other platform except corel. Here is the link. Might need time to process in drive? not sure how it all works lol

No problems in my pc with your video. I Copy-Pasted the file on the timeline, added the Auto Exposure filter, and rendered a 1080p30 and a 1080p60 and both files worked just fine.

We obviously need to focus on your pc and your installation of VS. Let's re-visit that.

What are the details of your pc: main memory, and cpu specs, and the OS

You may need to remove VS from your pc, including the clean-up process described in the forum's sticky and then re-install VS.

No problems in my pc with your video. I Copy-Pasted the file on the timeline, added the Auto Exposure filter, and rendered a 1080p30 and a 1080p60 and both files worked just fine.

Thank you so much for going so far to help meee! I think the problem is with corel. I converted my video file to avi and it didn't crash. let me put filters. Heck it even let me hit the play button after putting in timeline and not crashing. So the problem is corel. Why would it work when converted to AVI?

Like Al -- I have no problems in using that video sample, if it were Video Studio's fault then everyone would have a problem.

Some Mp4 type video may need the Quicktime codec.
Do you have that codec installed on your pc.

I think the OP is on the right track with an intermediate codec.

Specifically I would suggest Cineform, which GoPro bought and released as freeware. Install the GoPro freeware editing package and Cineform will be available to VS. Be sure to choose the HD frame resolution and a framerate of either 30 or 60.

Then you'll have pure index frames for editing purposes. You'll also have huge files, but you can delete them when you're finished.

Aside from stability, Cineform offers another potential benefit. From your screen shots, I infer that your camera output is 8-bit color (i.e. 24-bit, 8 bits per channel). I have found that the slightest tweaks to a clip with 8-bit color can produce color banding if exported to 8-bit final output. I avoid that by using Cineform as an intermediate codec, because it encodes with 10-bit color, and 8-bit final output doesn't show noticeable banding.

The point is that 2 of us do not have a problem with the video file, Charles are you saying that the sample crashes your program.
If I can prove it is a Video Studio fault then I would escalate to corel support.

Converting to another codec is just a workround and does not address the actual problem.
