PSP 2018 Freezes When Working With Large Files

I tried to search this before asking, but for some reason it won't let me do any searches right now.

Anyway..my problem is that the program works great with small files, but I was trying to work with some files that are 12" X 12" when printed and the program freezes my whole computer. Even when I'm just trying to load thumbnails in the manage section. Thumbnails start to load and then everything locks up and I have to shut down by holding the power button. Task manager won't even open. I was using PSP 9 before this and never had this happen.

Don't start with Manage Mode and Collection enabled. Start in Edit mode.
Reset PSP with shift down key launching...

12" x 12" is a bit meaningless. What resolution, number of pixels etc etc?

I never had a problem with 20" x 20" 300dpr/ppi files. Multiple layers. 500+meg. I would be looking at something else that is causing the issues.

I am starting in edit mode. Not sure what you mean by scratch disk in PSP terms. I've heard of that in relation to Photoshop only.

A scratch disc is a disc drive that PSP can use while you are performing editing steps with your image on which PSP keeps "notes" of what you've been doing. It's called scratch discs because it's similar to how people keep scribbled scratch notes on paper as they progress through a tutorial or other procedure. A disc with lots of free space works best as a scratch disc because PSP has to keep writing to the disc and reading from the disc as you proceed with your work on the image(s) open in your workspace.

To enable a scratch disc, go to File>Preferences>General Program Preferences>Display and Caching. You'll see a box at the bottom of that dialogue that allows you to choose an appropriate disc to use as a scratch disc.

Are you actually using Jasc's PSP 9 or Corel's PSPX9? It would help if you would edit your profile in this forum and complete as much of the information there as you can, and particulary the versions of PSP you are using.

I am using PSP 2018. I was using PSP 9 prior and never had this problem. I will update my profile and thanks for the information. I'll give that a try.

Create a new folder and use explorer to copy or move the files you want to open into that folder. Then try to open the images in PSP from that location. If that works then the problem may be a file in the original folder that is causing problems for PSP. You may be able to figure out which file(s) by process of elimination.

OK, I seemed to have solved it, but not with your suggestion. I did what you said, and it made no difference, so for lack of any other ideas, I thought that since this computer has been upgraded to windows 10 from an original Windows 7 installation, I changed the compatibility mode to Windows 7 and now it runs like lightening.

Thank you to everyone who offered suggestions. Sometimes trying different things can lead you to the solution.

PSP 2018 have a lot of problem with Manage and Collection , have a ticket till march first day and still no solution , but I know that it need a patch to repair , cause 2018 erase Thumbs at each time your open it , Big problem

I don't know either, but I've fixed a lot of problems with different programs by changing the compatibility mode. Weird.

You've probably read this thread - viewtopic.php?f=56&t=63186&view=unread#unread - which refers to X7 fixing other issues. Is X7 the magic bullet?

I hadn't read that, but that's an anomaly as well, and I problem I have right now. I just get the program icons and not the thumbnails. I quit using Firefox and use Chrome now, but FF is still on my system. Might just remove FF and see what happens. Don't know why there'd be a connection, but computers display bizarre behavior sometimes.
