I have got as far as the last line of Trevor: "Repeat to replace all placeholders with your image clips."
The clips I placed on the timeline do not fill out the whole track: The first half is black with an FX.
The second half contains what looks like a long transition.
The playback is weird, exactly as I encountered before:
Black background divided into segments showing the numbers 1 -7, followed by a fade-in of just one of the clips.
That's not what split screen is all about.

Hello Mark,

It sounds like you're having a similar issue that I was having at first when dropping content into the timeline and using the <Ctrl> key. Basically, there seems to be a little delay in selecting some clips and pressing the <Ctrl> key needs to be done at the right time.

Please re-read what I posted earlier in this thread. Make sure that the clip you wish to insert is selected before you drag it to the timeline and press <Ctrl> key as you drag it. Also, release the <Ctrl> key after you've let go of the mouse button.

Hi
Those templates are available, mentioned by Robert earlier
First create a new Media folder(the +Add above Samples) , not instant project a media folder
Import the “SplitScreen01.vsmontage” 9 files to that folder
They look like the Instant Projects clips but are Split Screen Templates
Now double click any clip, should open the Split Screen Template Editor.

Drag to timeline and will open as normal, as IP templates do.

C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio 2018\EditingStyle\Style\Split Screen\PAL or NTSC

Instant Projects and Split Screen Templates look the same but are different.

Still does not explain why your Instant projects crash the program?

markguitre, are we talking to Mark or Lis??

Sorry guys I missed the first two replies on this page as I replied to the previous page post, upps

markguitre, did you miss this reply referring to the green, I notice Scubbie you also shows the file name?

and yes drag and drop with +CTR can be tricky, although the latest versions of VS seem to handle this better than before.

I drag the clip over the placeholder, then press CTRL, the new clip jumps over placeholder, drop image, release CTRL.

Mark Lis, markguitre = the same.

Yes, I have been careful to follow all the previous instructions given.
Here is the link to the Corel tutorial where it instructs you to access the new Split Screen feature through the "Instant Project" icon, which then brings up
the troublesome templates. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ConVw0cQXr8 (at 0.34 seconds).

In the latest attachment (provided by Scubbie) that's also the way my clips look when I use the "Split Screen Template Creator" above the timeline,
which is where I have no problem. However, with the preset templates, the tracks divide into three parts: first an FX black area, then a long crossfade transition, followed by the clip.
It plays back as a black background divided by (visible) numbers, then a crossfade transition, fading into only one of the clips!
Clearly a weird effect no one would ever want.

Hello Mark,

The reason why you are seeing the cross-fade is because VS is adding your clip to the timeline and not replacing the Placeholder.

It is doing this as it's not responding quick enough to know that you have selected the clip and are now pressing <Ctrl>. I know it's annoying. I've hit this a few times myself.

If you follow either Trevor's or my instructions slowly, ensuring that VS has selected the clip, then you should be fine.

Hi

Viewing the video shows the user dragging a Jpg image over the timeline clip
Listen to the video clearly ask to hold the CTRL key, the tool tip will change to show Replace Clip
When you see Replace Clip drop the image, then release the CTRL key.
What is described at the beginning are Instant Project Templates.

At 2 min 14 sec the Split Screen Template Creator is explained.
At the end the template is saved as an Instant Project, not a Split Screen Project, no wonder we get confused?

Key to VS2018 Split Screen is wrapping your head around TWO types of Split Screens and both share the same label of "Split Screen" yet they are different.

One is in the Instant Project library - these are pre-defined templates and can't be modified.

The second is a Split Screen editor where you create the splits you want.

Here is a link to a short live screen capture I created to get you started on the use of the Split Screen Templates in the Instant Projects library:

https://app.box.com/s/gs0lncn9x7mt5a27m70do9260iu91mxs

Here is the text version:

> Click on Instant Project icon.
> Click on desired Split Screen template.
> Right-click on selected template then click on desired location (at Beginning or End).

Template is inserted to Timeline and includes PlaceHolders, SpineLines and sometime a shape mask.
Optional: resize length of each track, copy/paste a PlaceHolder to create multiple insertions, etc.

> Click on Media library icon and select the resource folder containing your images/videos media to insert.

To add a media resource to the Split Screen template:
1. Click on (select) and hold mouse button on the first media to insert.
2. While holding mouse button begin to drag the media down to the Timeline.
3. After a short distance of dragging, depress and HOLD the CTRL (control) key on your keyboard.
4. Continue dragging selection over top of the desired Split Screen location PlaceHolder.
5. When over the desired Placeholder release the mouse button then release the CTRL key.

> Repeat the above sequence to populate each Split Screen template PlaceHolder.

Optional: resize length of each track, copy/paste a PlaceHolder to create multiple insertions, etc.
Optional: Share (render) an MP4 of the split screen portion you just created then use that file in another project.

> Complete your project and Share (render) as desired.

Re: Split screen template creator problem

Going by gewb's live screen capture video, I was able to successfully create a split screen effect using the preset templates.
My error was in pressing Ctrl at an imprecise time, and then letting go of Ctrl/mouse in the wrong order.
I thought I'd found a shortcut around this rather fussy process though.
> Click on Instant Project icon.
> Click on desired Split Screen template
If I then double-click on the template, that brings up the "Split Screen Template Creator" where I never had problems, and the chosen template is already there in the main window. Media is then easily dropped on the numbered boxes, not on the timeline.
But it ends badly when clicking OK results in the "Failed to Save Document" message followed by a crash.
It looks like if we really want to use those preset templates, we are stuck with a fastidious and error-prone method.
Thanks to all.

No problem anymore in adding media. But how to display a full size photo or video in each section?
As it is now, the media gets cropped; the more screens used, the more severely cropped.
I'm looking to have the entire photo or video shown in each split section.
