Hello
I am currently contemplating buying a new camera which can record in S-Log 3. All I know from the internet is that it takes a lot of effort to get the desired "better" results.
However, there seem to be programs which already have "lookup tables" to put onto the video clips, but I did not even find a hint on how to deal with a clip recorded in S-Log 3 in VideoStudio.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Jan

The "lookup tables" are called LUT's, and VS does not have this option yet; I have asked for this but no response so far. So you will need to manually add filters to your clips to adjust color, contrast, saturation, etc. VS has all the filters needed, just you will need to add them individually and adjust them each individually.

Re: How do I deal with material recorded in S-Log 3
VS2018 and also the bigger brother Pinnacle Studio 21 do not handle S-Log=Sony (V-Log=Panasonic, C-Log=Canon) footages. A logarithmic gamma mode is the type of recording of brightness information captured by the sensor. At the same time, a maximum dynamic range for post-production is maintained. A logarithmic gamma allows postproduction many freedoms. To do this, an NLE has to cope with the LUTs. There is the free version DaVinct Resolve 14 (soon also version 15). Free Download hier: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/de/pro ... ciresolve/
My way is often like, Grading with Resolve and further processing with Pinnacle Studio. But beware, it's a different world and not comparable to VS2018. I am also a beginner in this field and have dealt with this topic in my German forum.

Thanks for your replies.
I think I will - for the time being - refrain from using this method and just hope that VS will offer those LUTs in one of their next versions ...
But maybe to get one thing clear: S-Log 3 is only a method to have more possibilites in post-production, it does not enhance the quality as such, is that right?

Yes it is an advantage. There is much to note. Surely VS2018 will not be equipped with LUT. Even with Pinnacle is still nothing in planning. And only by hand a grading - rather no. Has the Sony (which model?) S-Log on board or do you have to buy the activation? For the GH5 V-log activation costs extra 100 €.

Re: How do I deal with material recorded in S-Log 3
The Sony Alpha 6300 has (amongst others) the possibility to record with S-Log 3.
I really thought this could be a "switch on and feel good" solution to have a better quality. As that is obviously not the case I will stick with the "normal" recording.

You get better quality in the sense that the recorded colors are flat, retaining highlights and dark shadow details. The net is increased capture of dynamic range in a scene. The most benefit is for difficult scenes especially in motion pictures. The cost is the absolute need for skillful and time consuming post-processing to get the color grading one desires. LUT's help the less skillful person do the postprocessing easier.

Aljimenez has explained the use of log perfectly
. If you want to know more about the Sony a6300 and S-Log, visit the forum mentioned above (if Jan Germany points to german origin). A user @HGReimann is equipped with this Sony a6500 and has a good basic knowledge. He also own a good NLE knowledge.
