VS 2018 ultimate install issues

Post by wlopatin »

I am asking the great volunteers here for help because I have not received the followup help I requested from Corel. It seems I have always gotten better help from this forum anyway.

I purchased VS2018 Ultimate as an upgrade to VSX10 Ultimate. After receiving the new serial number and the download link, I downloaded and installed. It only took about 10 minutes but when I open it, I could not find all the extra's that are supposed to come with the Ultimate version; such as Boris Title Studio, New Blue Titler Pro 5, Boris Graffiti, etc. I opened a trouble ticket with Corel and their response was to uninstall via a link they sent to get VS2018_Cleanup, and then reinstall via a new link that was included.

I did all of that and this time the install took several hours, but there are still some issues.

1) in the Windows10 start menu, there now appears an entry for: "Boris FX Continuum Corel" under that menu folder is menu item,"Continuum Title Studio" that does NOT work. When I click on that menu item, a windows error box appears that says, "missing shortcut" windows cannot find "Title Studio.exe"
2) in the Windows10 start menu, there is an menu folder, "New Blue" within that folder are 3 menu items, "Manage Activation", "Manage Activation 64 bit", and "New Blue Activation Manager" I tried "Manage Activation 64bit" but it said New Blue is already activated. When I click on the last item "New Blue Activation Manager" it asks for me to create an account.
3) still not sure about Boris Graffiti essentials, I, II, VII, IV, etc.
4) each of these items seem to work within VS2018 if I select the appropriate item in the FX tab. but I don't know if these are the new versions or old versions that were installed with VSX10 Ultimate, since I did not install VSX10 first but thought I could keep both for awhile.

There should be more details about this so I can be sure all installed properly, and I can make sure I received everything I paid for.

Thank you.

They are all plug-ins. None of them are stand-alone programs which you can open and use outside of Video Studio. And if they are there in the FX tab of VS 2018, they came with VS 2018. The installation procedure does not copy plug-ins from earlier versions -- although with some of them at least, you can copy them manually from an earlier version to a later one.

Thanks so much for clearing this up. I guess there is some error with the install file since it added those entries to my windows start menu that don't work. Perhaps this can be fixed for others.

I am also not sure about the various Boris essentials files. Is there someplace where I can see a list of what is supposed to be included so I can check that they are there too? Do they work through a single Boris plug-in or are they just added to the FX tab as individual effects.

I am just trying to learn how to use all the new features before starting on a new project.

Thanks.

They are listed in my Start menu in Windows 10 too, but I just ignore those.

As for the Boris plug-ins they are only Boris Graffiti and Boris Continuum Title Studio and have entries in FX (with the latter called BCC Title Studio). The other plug-ins are the NewBlue Essentials packages and NewBlue Titler 5. And then there are five plug-ins from proDAD: Adorage, Mercalli 2, RotoPen, Script and Vitascene 2. These all have entries in FX.

Just to let everyone know, I compared all the FX from my VSX10 ultimate install with my new VS2018 ultimate install and I do see the exact same 125 effects so I think everything is there. I don't know why the install made entries to the windows menu that don't work but these can easily be deleted from the windows menu. If anyone needs instructions for windows 10, I can help.

But I did notice something else, When I go to the share folder and select DVD and get to the dvd creation menu, there were 71 choices for DVD theme menu's while in the new version there are only 21 menu theme choices. What happened to the others which I might have been offered over the years as free extra's? Is there any way to install them so they would work with VS2018 or do I have to resort to VSX10 to create DVD's?

Go to the Home/Welcome screen -- the small button to the left of the Capture tab in the top centre of screen. Then go to the Get More tab and scroll down to the bottom. You should see a Graphics Pack. Download that. When VS 2018 was first released, it simply downloaded a new folder to the Desktop labelled Graphics Pack. It contained about 50 exe files, with no overall setup file. Originally, you had to install each of these manually. We complained and Corel may now have streamlined things by actually installing all the exe packs, as well as creating the folder on the desktop.

The blurb for it says that apart from various objects, it also contains "an expanded title and font collection". Indeed, the folder contains DoMore_Title_01 to 04 and 07 and 08, but strangely missing 05 and 06. However, it might be noted that 07 and 08, despite being labelled Title, are possibly the old 07 and 08 font packs. And IIRC in the past we have discussed the missing packs 05 and 06, which were also missing in previous versions' Do More, and had decided they had in fact been included in the original install of VS. However, I simply don't know if this also happened in the first installation of 2018

Anyway, I now have 8 Blu-Ray menus (and that was all that came in the original installation). But I now have 12 Smart Menu DVD templates, 19 Thumbnail templates, and 8 Text templates. That totals 39, which is at least more than your 21. However, I have no idea where the missing 32 templates, which would bring the total to your 71, have gone.

But install that Graphics Pack and see if you have at least got a few more than 21. I'd also remind you that the Smart Menu templates are extremely customisable so you really don't need a huge number of templates.

I've been thinking about this again overnight. I only installed both VS 2018 and X10 in the past couple of days on this new computer. I hadn't added anything to X10 since the initial install, apart from updating it to X10.5. So I opened it this morning and counted the disc templates. There were exactly the same number as I got in VS 2018 and reported above (8 BD; 12 Smart; 19 Thumbnail; 8 Text).

I then went to the X10 Do More page and found two Menu template packs (1 and 2). I installed those, and went back into X10 to count the number of templates. Very big surprise. There were now 27 Blu-Ray templates; 22 Smart; 33 Thumbnail; and 18 Text -- a grand total not of 71 but 100!

So I went back to the Graphics Pack and tried reinstalling DoMore_Title_01 and 02 in VS 2018. But what came up was an offer to Repair, Modify or Remove my installation of those packs yesterday. I chose Repair, but this did nothing to increase the number of templates in VS 2018.

I also tried our usual trick of renaming the 21.0 folder in C:\Users\[YourName]\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro (x64) and letting VS rebuild it when I reopened the program. But again nothing changed.

I also started reinstalling DoMore_Title_07, but then noticed that it was saying it was installing an X10 title pack! The installation routines for DoMore_Title_01 and 02 did not mention which version they were being applied to, but I now suspect they may also have been directed at X10 and not 2018.

In other words I suspect this has all been another screw-up on Corel's part...

OK, I understand and followed your suggestion about the graphic pack and found an additional confusion. When I clicked on install, something downloaded and then install button lit up again. So, thinking it now had to be installed, I clicked on the install button and something downloaded again. I did this a third time and then just went back to the VS welcome screen. Then the install really started; and tried 3 times so I had to cancel the 2nd and 3rd times. I now notice extra project templates but not much of anything else so I'm not sure I really did it correctly.

I rechecked the DVD menu themes and found for VSX10 there are 71 but for VS2018 there are only 19.

I also see that there are fewer titles selections within the edit section, title tab. For VSX10 I have 50 to select titles from but for VS2018 there are only 34. I do understand that there are also ways to make titles using the extra plug-ins in the FX tab.

These differences really make me wonder about the VS2018 being worth it.

Yes, same here. But this has always been the case. In X10 and earlier versions, when you went to Do More there were Title Packs 7 and 8, and when you installed them the Titles went from 34 to 54. I now suspect that DoMore_Title_07 and 08 are the same as those in X10 Do More, but since I had manually installed them from the Graphic Pack, and they indicated they were for X10, they still don't appear in VS 2018, which remains at 34.

This one doesn't particularly disturb me since something similar occurred a few versions ago. What I did was go to an even earlier version and made a new project, then dragged Titles 35 - 54 into the timeline, and saved it. I then opened the project in the later version of VS and dragged those titles up from the timeline into the Title window. And this all worked just fine. I'll do that again now.

But the DVD template issue has me beat.

OK, I tried what you suggest for the titles from VSX10 to VS2018 and it worked! great news. Now if someone can figure out how to get more DVD menu templates for making DVD's. These come in handy when I am making something for someone else and I can show them choices and let them pick what they like. When doing a project for myself, I know I can customize to make it what I want.

As always, I hope this information helps others as well.
Thanks for the great support.

I've just done something for the first time ever, though it seems to have worked. You might want to try it too, though if things go wrong you should be able to revert to the set-up you had before.

I went to C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio X10\Content which is where the Menu Templates are stored. I copied the Menu Templates folder. Then I went to C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio 2018\Content and renamed the Menu Templates folder there (I called it Menu_Templates_OLD). Then I pasted the X10 folder. This required Admin authorization but occurred quickly.

When I opened VS 2018, I now have 100 templates!

My only remaining question is why you have only 71 templates and I have 100. Remember these were fresh installs on a new computer. And as I said in one of my posts above, after the successful updates I went from 39 to 100. Mind you, that includes the Blu-Ray templates. But adding the 27 BD templates I now have to your 71, means you would still have 2 less than me.

You are right that I don't yet have Blu-Ray but have no idea of anything else different. It is not easy to produce a list of the ones I actually have without a manual typing process. I guess it's not worth it unless you are really interested in follow through. I'll do it if necessary.
