Manually arrange media in library

Post by Robtvon »

Hi -
In older versions of VS, you could manually arrange media in the library so that they are in the order you want. Then you could select all of them and drop them on the timeline. In VS 2018, it doesn't appear to let you select a clip and drag it somewhere else in the same folder. Is this possible with VS 2018? It's almost like it is constantly sorting according to one of the preconfigured sort choices.

I have the same problem and this is a huge deal for me. To the point that if this feature has been removed, I will have to fall back to an earlier version.

This issue has been reported. Feel free to raise it with technical support as they may pick up some valuable information from your report.

As a workaround, I have been able to move one clip at a time, leave that media library and then return. You should find that the clip has moved as required. It's a pain, but it's worked for me.

I have the same problem, it is a shame that the features from one version disappears in the upgrade

It hasn't "disappeared". I found that if you have a few items in the library then it's ok.

Scubbie.
When you say a few, I have more than 10 and it doesn't function properly. You mentioned earlier about the workaround and I found that too. I'm sure it's a bug that needs addressed since you can see it wants to move the clips, it just doesn't follow through until you leave the library and them come back to it.

The reason I've said "a few" is because I haven't been in a position to count the specific number of clips that triggers this issue. I did find it some time back and reported it.

As I had a lot of clips for a particular project, I had imported them all before I found out about this issue. I deleted the media library and started again, but that didn’t help. So I broke down what I was looking to do into a much smaller set of tasks and was able to get some success.

It is annoying (choosing my words carefully here). It has been reported as a bug. I can only hope that a fix is coming soon as I'll be busy using VS for the next couple of weeks.

To overcome this problem I use Fast flick. I select one of the last instant project, these projects align picture one after the other, then I import the pictures into FastFilck. and organise the pictures in the proper sequence. Once done I import the project in VideoStudio and finish the job with the features available

Certainly, FastClick is a good option. I've used it myself a few times. It has it's limitations though and IMHO is best for stills, not video clips unless those video clips have been edited suitably first and the edits rendered into their own short pieces.

A few things I would suggest:
  1. Organise the images you want to use in separate subfolders on your computer. Ideally, group them so that a batch will play together in a theme or relevant sequence
  2. For large projects, limit yourself to enough images for one run, definitely not more than two runs, of the template sequence at a time. Any more and managing it becomes time-consuming to adjust clips in the sequence as FC needs to render the video each time you move, add or remove a clip/photo.
  3. Same each project from within FastClick and import into VS 2018. Once in 2018, save project again. Now edit if required. Change the titles, check the panning effects, etc. Remove the soundtrack, unless you really want the standard track repeating time and time again. Add and video content between suitable segments of the template if required and sort out any background noise track (i.e. engine noises, etc.).
  4. Save the final edit (I always use version numbers to help keep track of all these saves)
  5. Copy the saved .vsp file into your media library.
  6. Repeat 2-5 until you've used all the images and take the opportunity to use various FastClick templates
  7. Once you've edited the last group of pictures, select 'New Project', set the screen video properties as required, etc.
  8. Drag and drop the first .vsp file from your media library
  9. Repeat step 8 for each .vsp file until you've added them all in the sequence you require, saving your work periodically. Do check the project to ensure that it is working as required
  10. Once the final .vsp file has been added, check the project and ensure that you are happy with the sequence, etc.
  11. Add some suitable music tracks, editing appropriately
  12. Save & render
For a bit of a lark, I've just messed around with FastClick and VS 2018 a little to see how well it would handle 2,000+ images. I was up to around 1,500 and added a final folder which brought the total to over 4,800 (whoops). I then imported it into VS and VS has handled it Ok. VS is running very slow at the moment and the resulting video would be just under 2 hours and 2 minutes long. I may attempt to render it, but I have no intention of publishing the video.

Thanks for the replies everyone... glad to hear it's been reported. I was in a crunch to get a project done so I just went into Storyboard mode and was able to arrange the media somewhat there. Not the greatest solution but it sorta worked. I tend to have hundreds of clips/stills and if you can't arrange them in the order you want, the editor is pretty-much worthless.
