Clone tool problem in PSP 2018

I've been using paint shop Pro for a long long time. My latest version was X9. I purchased and installed PSP 2018 and so far, everything has been working great and not much differently than X9. The clone tool has me stumped. I right-click on a source area and then click where I want the data from the source area to show just like I did in X9 and either nothing happens, or I get a strange image with vertical lines and check marks in it that are not even close to the color I picked. I've reset the clone tool to its defaults and this didn't fix the problem.

Can someone please help me with this problem?

Are you by chance using a monochrome image or a Black and white image. ?
Try Image > Increase Color Depth > RGB 8 bits / Channel on a copy of the image and see if that helps.

Thanks. That solved the problem. The image was 8 bit greyscale. Strange. I never had this problem with X9.
