edit func't clip preview plays fine but not project preview

When I preview the clip preview screen vidoe is fine but when I preview the the project screen video is a screen made up of horizontal lines of differering intensities and some audio but the video resolution is terrible. What is going on? What have I done or what do I have to do. This happens after I have performed a multitrim video edit
