Thanx to Joe for the perfect description of one of my two problems with the crop tool.

The second one is that the frame of the crop tool always has a size of 300x151 pixels in the moment I select the crop tool.
If I want to crop different files with the same size I always have to select the size I need. In older version I had to select the size and position of the frame once. In the moment I opened the next file and selected the crop tool I got the same size and position of the crop tool frame than for the file before. This was very good and now I have to select the size and position for each image.

That seems to be a very specific crop value.
When you get the crop rectangle, what does it say in the right hand side of the floating crop bar . Mine says Last Applied on many occasions.
When starting Cropping I choose the crop tool, and my first thing is to clear the crop values. Then I might select a preset or just draw a crop area, If I draw an area it says Free Form.
When I choose my preset for the Canon 5D it says the name I saved it under (I also add the pixel dimensions to the name so I can remember what the dimensions are) . After that crop for my next image it says Last Applied.

Have you tried clearing the crop dimensions first.
Also if you are still getting it sticking to the 300 x 151 pixels have a look at your crop presets and at the right hand side second bottom from the top Reset to Default - resets that tool
If that does not work then look in your presets nd if you see one with those dimensions of 300 x 151 then delete it / remove it using the third button Resource Manager and see if that fixes your problem.

If I select the crop tool the right hand droplist is always empty. It does not care which setting or option (for example "last used") I select, the next time I select the crop tool it is again at 300x151px. I did not find a setting with this dimensions.

I consider PSP 2018 as broken. The crop tool for me is unusable. The fact that Corel removed the list of open photo edits from the end of the Windows drop-down menu makes working with a large number of open edits difficult. Color management does not work with Epson printers. Some EXIF information is lost when a raw files are imported from Aftershot Pro 3. These are just a few of the PSP 2018 Problems. PSP X9 is still very useful for casual work, screen captures, and as a front into my flatbed scanner. I am now using Affinity Photo for any serious photo work. It is my hope that the next iteration of PSP corrects these problems and continues forward with the original vision of JASC. PSP has much promise and it is sad Corel has lost its way with PSP2018.

I'm not quite sure if you are saying the same thing that I am because I'm not saying that you have to be zoomed in on an image before invoking the crop tool to see the issue. So I'll try to be more specific just to be sure.

Open an image in your workspace, one that is small enough in pixel size that it appears immediately at 100% zoom within the workspace. There should be no scroll bars, just an image window with the image.

Invoke the crop tool. You'll immediately see that scroll bars have now appeared at the right and at the bottom. However, the image itself and the image window haven't changes in size and the image is still completely visible within the window. But the presence of the scroll bars tells you that there is not something outside of the image window. If you now move only the scroll bars you'll see that what is outside the image window is a grey border surrounding the image itself. This is the border that the new crop tool in PSP2018 adds to the image window. It is meant to provide some extra canvas space so that when you use the rotation handle the image has some space within which to rotate. And that is because the new crop tool rotation handle rotates the image and not the crop tool bounding box. That extra canvas space AND the fact that the rotation handle does not rotate the bounding box but now rotates the image are the things many - if not most - of us do not like about the crop tool in PSP 2018.
Thank you for this replay. Now I'm beginning to understand how and why this new crop tool actually works. Unfortunately there is one issue. When I select the crop tool the scroll bars are partly cover the image. As I usually work with several small (500px) images open at the same time, this is really annoying. The simplest solution for me would be the scroll bars not to appear at all. Just an image with that extra space.

I sometimes resist posting in case I have got it wrong or am not sufficiently experienced to understand the complexity of a particular operation of the software.
However, with regard to the disaster apparent when trying to use the PSP 2018 Crop Tool, I seem to be not alone.
I previously used PSP X9 and there you can set ANY SIZE of crop you want which is exactly what any ordinary photographer wants.
But straight away after buying the new PSP 2018 I noticed that the Crop Tool behaves entirely differently!!!! Who at Corel thought that this was a good idea or do they like to stuff things up BIG-TIME?
Now, if you move one side of the Crop the other sides ALL move too!!!! Who in their right minds would ever do this???
The photographer wants to crop his photo EXACTLY how he wants it to be cropped and not be forced to compromise with some stupidly changed software.
If you MUST CHANGE it at least give us the option to keep the old method!
What IS going on here?
Is there a better option than Corel?
Tell the truth....but gently.

Hi Phil87,
I am not seeing what you have stated viz "Now, if you move one side of the Crop the other sides ALL move too!!!!"
If I move the left side of a crop rectangle, the top and botttom also move, but not the right hand side AND only if I have Maintain Aspect Ratio ticked.
If I untick Maintain Aspect Ratio then only the one side that I adjust is moved. If I cliclk the Clear button and make sure Maintain Aspect ratio is unticked then I can freehand draw any crop rectangle I desire so I can do "The photographer wants to crop his photo EXACTLY how he wants it to be cropped " as you suggest.
The only thing really broken is that the image rotates and the extra unwanted grey areas that appear.

Thanks Trevor,
That message about my old email address was dated Feb 25th and I hab never seen it before today. Sorry about that.
I went in and changed my email address and things went haywire after that as I couldn't log in no matter what I tried.
In the end they raised a ticket to get it sorted.
All ok now I think.

Thanks hartpaul,

I found it eventually on the Tool Options - Crop Tool but several items including "Maintain Aspect Ratio" and the Crop Tool icon itself were hidden behind arrows.
It works ok now in Free Form with the Maintain aspect ratio unchecked.
Thanks.

Wow. I've only used the crop tool in PSP 2018 once; this morning. Didn't see the problem, probably because I was working on a tiny avatar (and I ended up using an old one); I was trying to get the sizes right, and completely failed. All the same, now I'll look at the crop tool again. Very glad to be forewarned!

Can someone tell me if the crop tool in version 2019 is Ok or not?
I don't like to install a demo version of PSP just because of the crop tool.
