VS x10 loading multiple format videos

Post by elent1 »

I tried to load .avi .mov and an .mp4 -- got a partial (audio only) from the avi and a full load on the mp4. some .mov's were accepted some weren't. The only way I could get all of them in was to use a 3rd party converther (all to mp4 -- this also solved the choppy .mov previews).

I'm very new to this whole scene, so operator error is quite possible. Corel support has been, to say the least, ineffective. Question, is this program restricted to the video format described in Project Properties only? Baffles me.

Any suggestions, information?

Welcome to the forum, elent1.

Since you say you are new to video editing, maybe you are unaware that both the avi and mov formats are what we call wrapper formats. This means that in both cases, a very wide variety of other formats, from a wide variety of cameras, call themselves either avi or mov, while in reality those names 'wrap' other formats. The original avi format, for instance, is huge -- it is uncompressed video and can run to about 60 or 65 GB -- yes that's 65 gigabytes! But you can also get video formats which are heavily compressed and tiny, but still call themselves avi. And the same goes for .mov, which was a wrapper format established by Apple to make it easier to edit.

But the result is that, without further information from you, we have no idea what kinds of avi and mov files you are trying to edit and are having trouble with. If you can in fact put those files in the VS library window or even the timeline, even if they don't play, can you please right click on samples of them, again either in the library window or timeline, and select Properties. Then copy ALL the Properties of the different formats here, or else take screen shots of the Properties boxes and upload them here as Attachments. Then we may be able to start giving you some sensible advice.

Thanks. here's the site where they come from: http://www.delmarlearning.com/companion ... /index.asp

Oddly enough, this is a file site for a tutorial book for VS (Picture Yourself: VSPro x5)

I believe I found what I did in error. But, in being page one new, let me know what you think. I 'imported' the files directly into the media window. I think I should have used 'capture.' This, i believe, would allow VS to properly "wrap" the incoming video/audio file??
