Burned DVD has audio sync error - details included

Post by dav »

Capturing analog audio/video as MPEG-2, importing into WS2, to author w/ menus. Many sucessful projects, but some sync errors ocassionally cropping up - example

Compliant MPEG-2 program stream, I frame only, VBR 6500, Audio MPEG 48KHZ, 224 - not using disc templates.

I am experiencing an audio sync glitch which can occur anywhere in the
file and is visible in the video as well. When the error occurs the video repeats itself for split second & from then on audio is out of sync.

Like most posts attested to - when the file is played in software player there is no error seen, just in the finished DVD. Corrupt file?

Tried the PVAStrumento fix (default settings) - launched in SE98, but not XP -- but just made a mess of the file, originally over 3 GB PVA turned it into a hacked 1.8 GB file (glad it was free and file was a copy:)

Maybe VideoReDo will be next - ?

The MPEG-2 file is direct capture, no editing at all - I do not see the error every time I author a disc. But it's a Pain.

I am not experiening ANY OTHER problems, WS2 does everything else wonderfully smooth. I love the software but I gotta find a fix or workaround for this error.

PC CHIPS MB (dont laugh it works well)
AMD ATHLON 1.8GHZ (something like that)
HDD - 3 samsung 160GB, WD 300GB, etc
HI POINT ROCKET 100
VENUS ext enclosure
512MB RAM
CANOPUS MVR1000 MPEG encoder

Oh yeah, this isnt a USB transmission error as the Drives I am using
are all internal on this project.

Suggestions welcomed, I have not seen anything setting in WS2 that might help but maybe I missed something.

It is acting like a corrupt file, although I wouldn't expect your Canopus card to generate a corrupt file??? I wonder if a glitch in the source video can confuse the hardware MPEG encoder???

If VideoReDo doesn't fix it, you could try Womble MPEG Video Wizard ($120 after 30-day trial), which also has a tool that's supposed to fix MPEGs.

The videotapes are pretty old. The VideoReDo page mentions that
old tapes with unstable sync, etc could produce MPEG files with sync
errors during encoding. I downloaded the trial, the site gave no details on
how long the trial lasts though. Hopefully long enough to try it on a few
files and see.

I cant recommend PVAStrumento though I had high hopes for it, the program would not even launch in XP - It did in SE98 but it wiped out so
many GOPs the file was trashed - I cant believe that there were that many
errors in the file when there was only ONE glitch that resulted in the asynchronous condition.

Did you try playing the VIDEO_TS file from HDD? If so, does it glitch?

It is most unusual to make DVDs in I-frame only: this could have repercussions with some DVD players: does it happen with all makes of player at the same point?

I suggest you encode the audio with DD AC-3 2/0 at 192 kbit/s.

No, just the MPEG-2 file only, and I cant do that at the moment I erased
the VIDEO_TS to write another one.

Really?
I thought it might make the video easier to edit in MSP7 later if needed
but wasnt aware of any incompatibility issues with playback eq. The DVD PLAYed fine in my APEX 1100AD, but I do remember really weird stuff
in other function modes, rew. for instance I got a Green screen and never saw that before - well IF I edit I can also re-encode edited file as IBBP I suppose.

Not sure if Canopus MVR has this option -- for the Dolby AC-3 - or are you
saying do this in Workshop2?

I am going to try this trial of VideoReDo and if that doesnt help create a new file - I have done that before, scraped an error file and made a new one and for whatever reason that next try was OK. It seems to be hit and miss I just hate the extra time this takes and like things to work right the first time (dont we all)
