Vstudio Prior Versions Kept

Post by wstagner »

Just curious as to which and how many versions of Vstudio are maintained on systems?
I have 7, 8, 9, 10/10.5 and vstudio 2018.

One of the reasons I keep these is that I always use libraries to store my project files. I don't export/import those libraries to new Vstudio versions.

Hi Walt

I have X5 through to the latest version, but only as a test platform to help out on this forum
Otherwise I would probably uninstall all other programs than the X10 and 2018.

I do not have a problem with the libraries as I only use them for the current project, I have no problems in resetting the libraries at any time.
My current 2018 library has 20 folders all being used for testing.

My next holiday will see me clear the library to start a fresh with a new project.

FWIW, I have each version from X6 to 2018. On another old computer I also have X5 though I seldom access that computer.

My main concern is creating/reading/playing/writing (saving) project files. VS is backwards compatible, so generally I have only versions X8 thru 2018 installed on my main PC. However, since X8 will write vsp's in X7 and X6, I effectively have those versions covered as well.

Despite that I've found to my dismay that Corel periodically changes items in the library: frames, etc. Found that out the hard way an when older (maybe 3yrs?) vsp played with a different feel to it. Tracked that down to the library samples, and since then I've copied the samples folder of every version I ever had to a separate location, folder by VS version. And using those old sample items works fine. For example, you won't find a pointing finger icon in the current 2018 objects, but there are 2 in the X5 samples folder and they import just dandy into 2018 video and overlay tracks. Which they ought to - png files after all.

Although they should, software developers don't generally pay a lot of attention to compatibility. :(

In VS case you can just drop the last two words...
