How to share: AVCHD disc and MP4 of the same project?

Post by Raikku »

Hi

I am making a holiday movie (VS10). I like to have my copy as an AVCHD-video disc, and so far I have burned my project into AVCHD-folders to check it out before burning it to a disc. As my friends also would like to have the holiday memories I am wondering which is the best way to proceed as they no longer want to have discs but MP4 instead. Is it ok, if I use the .mt2s files (I have split my project into stages like "day 1", "day 2" etc.), which are now in my AVCHD-folders to re-create my project and burn it to MPEG? Any quality loss? I have smart render enabled. There is no way to use menus when saving in MPEG?

Hi
Your AVCHD .m2ts files may be Bluray compliant, burning to Bluray would be the best option.
You would need a Bluray burner and Bluray player.

We can also burn to standard DVD, two options
1 / A Hybrid disc that uses the AVCHD files burnt to DVD, approx. 30 minutes per disc
You would need a Bluray player to play these discs.

2 / A standard DVD -- Convert the AVCHD to Mpeg2 to burn a DVD, 1 hour per disc for full quality.

Converting the AVCHD to Mp4 should be no problem.
Knowing the properties of the original video files would help in choosing the correct conversion settings.

So what type of disc are you intending to create and what are the properties of the original video files.
Right click one of the files on the timeline and choose properties, what are they?

Oh, what is the total length of your movie?

Hi

Thank you for your answer.
The total length of my movie is 56 min and I am going to burn it into a dual layer DVD.
The properties of the the original video files are:

Hi

If you are intending to burn a AVCHD hybrid disc then yes you will need a Dual layer disc
I have to say I have never successfully burnt a Dual layer disc, I gave up in the end and used single layer discs

If you intent to burn a standard DVD then 56 minutes will fit to a standard 4.3Gb disc.

I have been away for a while, but just f.y.i., I did succeed in burning a Dual layer disc. But naturally there was a spelling mistake right in the main tittle ☹. So I have to go on editing the project.
Lots has happened since. My old computer broke down and I bought a new one, Lenovo Think Pad PS2, core i7 8th gen. During the last days I have been trying to complete the (same) project. But, there is the big BUT. I opened the project with VS 2018. The first time I previewed the project, everything was ok, but when I started to edit, Corel VS started to really slow down, like it is saying ”Hmm, let me think …”, the preview (video)picture got stripy, the reader head stopped, or jumped over a few frames, the thumbnails on the timeline were slow to update. That happened every time there was more movement than just a bit. The photos are OK.

So I installed VS 10 instead. VS 10 works all right, it lets you edit and burn, no trouble at all. But, I think, the quality (of either ISO or AVCHD) is not as good as it used to be. I just don’t know what’s wrong. I wonder if my settings are not right or isn’t CVS not perfectly co-operating with my new computer. I have Smart Proxy and Hardware decoder acceleration enabled. I have made numerous tests with some other video editing programs, too, and they all seem to work ok. It looks like when there is more than just a little movement in the footage, the VS seems to drop frames out or something else happens, because the movement seems more “edgy” than before. I really would like to continue editing with Corel Video Studio because otherwise I do like it.

I share my projects with thumb drives, much cheaper and more flexible than DVD's and no limits on size and can be 4K. The cost is no menus like DVDs have. I use file names as the "menu chapters" but most of the time the thumb drive has just one file.

Hi Raikku
What you describe with poor playback may be a proxy issue, Make sure that your Smart proxy files have been created,

When you burn a DVD do you first render the project to Mpeg2 using Share Mpeg2
Then use that file to burn the disc.
Please read this guide as a workflow in burning a disc.
http://lata.me.uk/corel/all.htm

There is another poster having problems burning discs from the project having extensive render times.
Rendering to Mpeg2 works for him.

aljimenez, thank you. A thumb drive is a very good idea, at least for myself, for the reasons you mentioned. As to sharing my projects, unfortunately not everyone has a smart tv or know how to behave with a thumb drive. Besides loosing menus, another price you have to pay, is not being able to make nice DVD-covers which make a video DVD look more like a present if that is what is desired.

lata, thank you.
I am now in a process of burning my projects to Mpegs. But this occurred a problem. I do not know which Mpeg2 settings to choose. My Sony Cyber-ShotHX90v camera says, the video settings are AVCHD 50i 17 (FH). If I check “Same as the Project Settings" they change from if I pay attention to 50i

Unfortunately this guide says: Service unavailable

Hi Raikku

Just taking a step back, can you confirm that you wish to burn a DVD, we can burn a standard DVD by using Mpeg2 video files. This will allow for 60 minutes of video at full quality per disc
If using Dual layer then 120 minutes could be achieved.

Typical render settings
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 384 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

For AVCHD

We can burn a Hybrid DVD using HD video files (Avchd) burnt to DVD, would allow for approx. 30 minutes of video per 4.3 Gb disc, again a dual layer disc would double that limit.
I have to say I have never burnt a hybrid disc as Dual layer?

If using the latter ( hybrid disc ) then you should convert the project to Avc/h264, not mpeg2.
Your image as Same as Project settings are Avchd and would be suitable to render your project.

Otherwise Share AVC/H264 AVC (1920 x 1080, 50i, 20Mbps)

Ok a avchd dvd requires a Bluray player connected to your TV to be able to play?
Do you have Bluray playback capabilities?

Hi

In which case you should render the project to AVC/H264 which should be Same as Project
I assume that Same as first Clip is same settings as your project and the image you provided

Once you have rendered the project the new file should be under 8.6 Gb and fit to disc

To burn the disc
Start a new project
Share Disc Avchd opens the burner module
Top left for add media – add video browse for your video file.

Hi

I have rendered the project files to AVC/H264 -files. Then tried to burn an ISO, first with VS 2018. About after 20 mins VS stopped working and close down. Then I made an another try, this time with VS X10. At 27 minutes “Convert step got some problems” and stopped.

Then I rendered all the files again (VS X10, VS 2018 stops working every time), try to burn an ISO again. Everything looks good, VS X10 succeeded in burning. Then I open the ISO-file to check the quality. The beginning looks fine, then begins the trouble: There are tree of the totally seven Vsp-files in that project, where the rendering has caused some kind of staggering and shaking, which I had not noticed before. One file stopped there, the other then played on after a while. So I removed the faulty m2t files and rendered the VSPs again and again. I have done this pretty many times now and the result is zero. The edit phase looks fine, no staggering there. The original footage is fine, too. But when rendered again, the staggering is there again and again. I thought, maybe the Transition effect in front of the clip is causing this. I removed the transition effect. The result is still the same, the staggering only moves to a bit earlier phase.
I have spent hours and hours trying to get this work. Now I don’t know what to do anymore.

(One hour later) Except that I did. I got the idea of rendering these three vps-files in my old computer and it worked fine! What can cause this? Temp files, where? Should I delete them? At what point?

And now, finally, I have my project all completed, nicely on a DL DVD! I am so happy! But I wonder if I ever dare to try to make another AVCHD video again.

Hi

There still exists the problem of how to share the video as a file. I thought I would “combine” all the the video files in the project as one with CVS 2018. So I opened all the mt2-video files (which I rendered yesterday) in VS 2018 Edit. Then I chose Share, Same as Project settings and then Start. Nothing happens. I tried to close CVS 2018. Nothing happens. So I had to close it via Task Manager.

Then the same procedures in CVS X 10. Even the result was the same. Though it did seem to try to do something because it occupied 25% of the computer’s memory for about 20 minutes. Then it stopped and did not respond any more.

Then I thought, maybe I try using a competing video editing program (which I have never used before). In 20 minutes I had my new video file ready. I checked the quality. It was perfect. I checked the file size, it was nearly 10 G! I tried to copy that file into a thumb drive (30G, nearly empty). It won’t copy, because the file is too big! Now I am at a loss, again.

Hi

For the render problems you are experiencing with X10 and 2018 I think you should contact Corel Support, I have read through the posts again and do not see any reason why VS would not render the project files. Strange that it is affecting both programs

Thumb Drive

Most if not all usb memory sticks are formatted to Fat 32 bit, this has a 4 Gb file limit, certainly that would be stopping you copying the 10Gb file.
You can format the thumb drive to NTFS which would allow you to copy the file
Note -- This would remove all data on the drive.
Some devices will not support NTFS file system, that could be a problem depending on which device you use to read the thumb drive.
