How to replace an object

Post by frankfokke »

Wish: Treat a selection like a vector, being able to rotate, resize, twist it on the fly.

NOTE FROM SITE ADMIN: I have split these posts from the Wish List thread as they developed into a substantive discussion. This is better dealt with as a separate thread, as JoeB himself suggested in one of the posts below.

Are you unable to do what you want with the Edit Selection option?

How to replace an object

Post by frankfokke »

Hi Joe,
I must admit I'm not that familiar with all the selection functions, but I'll show what I mean by using a picture:

Image

What I want to be able to do is make a selection of the number plate 'THE GROOV' and place it over the number plate of the car. So I have to resize, rotate and distort the selection to make it fit.

This is a standard feature in photoshop, but I don't know how to do it in PSP. Perhaps it's a lack of knowledge by me.

Cheers, Frank.

The feature already exists in PSP (layers plus mesh warp and/or Pick tool are possibilities), so not something that was properly posted in the Wishlist thread. I would like to suggest that when you wish to achieve something in PSP that you don't seem to be able to achieve that you first post your question in the main forum and wait for some help there. If it turns out to be something that is not possible in PSP and you would wish Corel to add the feature then it's time to post it here.

So could you post this in the main forum, perhaps with a subject title similar to "How do I replace car license plate with GROOVE plate" and, of course, explain exactly what you want to do and attach the image so people can see exactly what you mean. Somebody will come along with their favorite method. :-)

By the way, it's always a good idea to post an example image with your initial post so that people don't have to guess at what it is you're trying to achieve. And, of course, provide good details of exactly what you're trying to achieve. I wasn't sure with your first post whether or not you mean the selection marquee (marching ants) which can be manipulated with Edit Selection, or an object that might have been selected and, perhaps, promoted to a layer.

Okay, noted, but not what I really meant. Perhaps I'd better call it moving an object/selection in 3D, being able to rotate it in 3D over the x, y or z axis.
Cheers, Frank.

That is definitely much more descriptive of what you seem to be looking for. I wasn't aware that Photoshop had 3d rendering ability. How does Photoshop treat a selection like a vector? And by "selection" do you mean the selection marquee or simply an object that is on a separate layer from another layer? In other words, in the image you posted is the GROOV plate part of the same image as the car, or is it actually a separate layer? Unless it's a separate object then it can't be manipulated separately the way either I or you describe - i.e., either in a 2D plane or a 3D plane.

Here you can see what I mean:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_tPCgGaEWc
The rim is copied as a selection which can be edited on the fly, rotated, resized in x and y axis. By making the rim smaller in the x-axis you get the effect as if it is rotated in 3D (even though the image still is flat ofcourse).

Or this example of the license plate at point 6.00 min to 7.15 in the movie.

Do you mean something like this? I did make the moved license plate a bit darker than it is in the bottom left of the photo because the original plate was quite dark.
