I decided to install PD 16 on this computer where PD 15 was working despite having VS 2018 loaded on it. Initially I loaded PD 16 without the proDAD Adorage and Vitascene plug-ins, just to make sure they were not the source of the problem. (I had not installed them with PD 15.) I also only installed the Essential Content Pack and not the three 'Premium' Content Packs. However, after the usual rigamarole of inserting SN and registration, all I got was the "!" error message and PD 16 would not open.

Worse, PD 15 no longer opens. So I am now totally mystified... and join totally the ranks of the PD dispossessed...!  Maybe for the moment I will have to load PD 16 on a computer which doesn't have VS 2018 on it...

Anyway, after the above, I then installed the CyberLink Action and Color Director programs which came with the PD bundle. They are stand-alone, and they both opened after installation. So obviously they are not affected by the VS/PD conflict...

I have to confess, though, that I won't for the moment be uninstalling VS 2018 as it is my main video editor. I have bought successive versions of PD mainly to check it against VS, particularly with video that VS has difficulties editing or rendering. I acknowledge, though, that others might use PD more regularly. And if, as seems likely from Walt's experience, VS has played a role in disabling other aspects of our computer life, then it will be serious indeed.

Thank you guys. I am one of those who wants my cake and eats it too... in other words I want both programs installed and running. Unfortunately I do not have a second computer.
Would creating another user allow me to install one or the other programs with that user, but not another user? (Clear as mud!)

You can, of course, establish another Profile on your computer, log-on to that account and install one or the other program. It could be a worthwhile test. We often advise people to do just that when they have trouble installing Video Studio -- not just 2018 but earlier versions as well. Maybe that would work for Cyberlink as well?

I have to add, though, that I have my doubts since it would still be being installed on the same drive as VS, and I would imagine whatever it is might still react badly to whatever VS is doing... But frankly, I have no real idea whether the new Profile establishes quite a separate set-up on the computer or not. Hopefully someone with a better idea about what happens, will jump in here...

I've heard back from Corel. They say that they have established that indeed PD is not working since VS 2018 has been installed. But since it is PD which is having the problem, it's difficult for them to know what is going wrong. They are thus waiting to see what Cyberlink thinks is happening.

To confirm what Ken just added I received a response on the Cyberlink Forum:

Feb 26, 2018 05:26
Corel have investigated this issue and have determined that the problem is with PowerDirector not VS 2018 and are waiting to see what action CyberLink are going to take to correct whatever is causing the conflict.
Would the forum moderator please ensure that CyberLink are activily searching for a solution, as many forum members have both programs installed and would like to be able to use both, otherwise it will be necessary to remove one of the programs and CyberLink is the likely candidate

I thank all those who jumped on this (from both forums) and hope for a quick solution. I know here I can thank wstagner and Ken... but thanks to anybody else I am not aware of.

Strange reply, I don't know since when is PD16 but if VS is the later than corel plays unfair.
It's not the same as way back when MS update cause havoc to VS. MS as the giant can do anything but corel vs. cyberlink?
Cyberlink can claim: PD16 worked great till you install VS so.... get rid of the culprit.

I tend to agree. In fact I had PD 16 before VS 2018 came out. I bought it on 5 November 2017. It certainly worked then. So clearly the VS installation has conflicted with it, not the other way around. I would have thought the onus is more on Corel to investigate -- although clearly, cooperation between the two companies is required. I can see part of the point Corel is making, viz. that they don't have direct access to the coding of PD to know what might be clashing with VS. Hopefully neither company will simply sit and point fingers at each other forever!

But while asik might have a point that the last installed should be the one to go, as I have already said VS is my main editor. My use of PD was only to check it out vs. Video Studio and to see if it could play and render video that VS has difficulty with. I can live without that, though am annoyed about the expense of having bought a program which now will not work at all because of something VS has done!

I received this response today on the Cyberlink forum:

Hi,

I can confirm that CL R&D are currently investigating the issue.

to be clear, I've had every Corel vstudio version since 7 and PD versions 12, 13, and 15 all COEXISTING & running happily.
It wasn't until installing vstudio 2018 that PD 15 no longer runs.

BJTAP you could create a virtual machine on your computer running whatever version of windows you're running and run PD there. You can download a copy of vmware player from http://www.vmware.com. It's free for personal use.

True for me on previous versions of Corel VS and PD.
I went to the vmware site: which program should I use as they list so many.
Thanks

The only problem, though, is that you then have to install Windows again on the Virtual Machine -- which with Win 10, takes a long time...
