Plugins (or standalone versions) for 64bit PSP??

Post by JoeB »

I am curious about how many plugins (or standalone programs that do plugin-type stuff) are actually available for use in 64bit PSP2018, and thought the best way to find out (considering I've Goggled the best I can but it doesn't seem to be definitive) was to check with PSP 64bit users here. To narrow things down, below is a list of plugins or standalone plugin-type programs that I have, either as plugins or using standalone versions I load with a script. So I'm only asking if anyone knows of other plugin-type programs (either in plugin versions, standalone versions, or both) that aren't on my list. If they are standalone programs as opposed to - or as well as - just plugin versions then, of course, they don't have to be 64 bit.

I suspect not but thought it was worth checking. I should add that most of what I would do is generally covered by what I have, (although there are several 32bit plugins that I still kind of like because they can create some interesting effects if used with blend modes in PSP - Mura Meister's come to mind. :-) But just wondering if there was anything else I'm not aware of that it might be fun to check out.

So here's what I don't need:

- AKVIS plugins
- Alien Skin (Eye Candy, etc)
- Athentech Perfectly Clear
- Aurora HDR
- DXO Viewpoint (or any other DXO product)
- Harry's Filters 4
- Luminar
- NIK Collection
- Portrait Pro
- Topaz Labs
- Vanderlee Snowflakes

It's more a curiosity question than anything else, but as I was sorting through my 32 bit plugins this evening to see what I really might still want to use this question popped into my mind, so thought I'd ask! :-)

And yes, I agree - I probably just have too much time on my hands! :-)

Appreciate the submission, but isn't that used to create your own plugins? Or am I missing something? I have heard of it of course, but am not actually familiar with it.

JoeB I use Filter Forge as well. It can be used simply as a plugin using collections of their presets. (15,000 of them!). OR you can create your own presets. If you like creative plugins then you should have a serious look at Filter Forge. Think Topaz Impressions or steroids.

Edit - I have trialed Flaming Pear Flood plugin with 64bit PSPx8. http://www.flamingpear.com/flood-2.html Seemed to work fine.

I have Flaming Pear plugins, which work with my 32bit PSP2018. I opened 64bit PSP2018 and pointed it at the Flaming Pear folder that I have in my PSPX7 plugins>EN folder, and none of the plugins show in 2018. I put a copy of the Flood plugin folder in the 2018 64bit Plugins>EN folder and it still doesn't show up. The same applies for PSPX9 64bit. I never installed the 64bit version of X8 because I never really used that program given the bugs it started out with.

How did you manage to get X8 64bit to find your Flaming Pear plugins and show them in the Effects>Plugins dropdown?

JoeB I'm winging it a bit here so I may be wrong. My Flaming Pear trial was with PSPx8 on my old laptop which recently went to computer heaven. All 64bit. I never used the 32bit version of PSPx8. I created a Temp Plugin folder. Every plugin I get I copy to that folder. Topaz, Nik etc etc etc, all in one folder. I placed the Flaming Pear Food plugin in that folder and it worked. No issues. I never played with it much as I thought it was to gimicky. And was very slow.

Careful with Filter Forge. It's addictive. Remember there are two parts to Filter Forge. You can spend a lifetime using any of the 15000 free presets. But you can also open up a whole new world by editing and creating your own. The trial version is the full blown version. There are restrictions on each of the versions when you make a purchase. Make sure you buy the version that suits your needs/wants. The ability to edit and create presets doesn't come with the cheaper versions. There is also a 3000x3000 pixel limit of the cheaper versions as well. Watch their site for prices. The 'Standard' version is currently showing a price of $249.00. But I got is for $69.00. They have some crazy discounts from time to time. Shopping around may save you a lot of money. I use Filter forge as a plugin from either PSPx8 or Photoline. But some programs wont open Filter Forge as an external editor. Not that that is a worry in PSP. Lots of videos on the web. Have fun. It's consumed many enjoyable hours on my computer.

@bruce1951,

After reading your post I recalled that I once had a version of Filter Forge (prior to a couple of hard drive crashes) so I did a File Explorer search of my latest computer which has drives installed that had backups of stuff from previous computers. I have located a copy of an older version of Filter Forge (v.4). I also recall having fired it up but not having spent any time learning how to use it, even just basic filters. Maybe even then I thought it was just for creating filters or re-creating - i.e., editing - the ones that came with the program. So I haven't tried installing it again yet but have checked out the Filter Forge site. Given what you said, I'm thinking I likely don't need the latest and greatest - and that would likely just add more filters rather than functionality in any case.

Once I get around to getting it up and running I'll spend some time in the help files and/or online information because I do recall I never did get familiar with it and maybe just let it gather dust. I'll let you know what I think once I've had time to revisit it. Thanks for the info!

And about Flaming Pear - I think I only have v.1 of Flood and the link you gave me is to v.2. So perhaps later versions of some Flaming Pear plugins might work with 64bit PSP but apparently none of the ones in my version do. That's life! It would be nice if they and Ulead did work with 64bit PSP but not worth upgrading given I can access them if needed with 32bit PSP. I actually do like that Flood plugin. :-)

After over 170 views, it would seem that the suggestion I received about Filter Forge might be the only other filter/plugin type program available - other than what I already listed that I have - that either has 64bit plugin versions only or at least 32bit standalone versions. I appreciate those taking the time to view the post to consider my request!

Hi Joe,

Sorry for being a bit late getting back. Francis Proctor did a few tutorials on FilterForge a while back in the context of Xara.

Here is a link to one of them that might interest you. It's old but gives a good idea (I think, as I haven't watched it for a year or so) as to some things that can be done with FF.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1fGeDix2nQ

I have FF 7 standard edition, so I'm limited to pixel size 3000 and 64 bit version, which is ok for me. I do regret not spending a little bit more, just to not get that 3000x3000 limit, but I rarely use it. Like Bruce says, watch for special offers.

I got ON1 Effects 10 a year ago, offered by Corel from the adverts within PSP. The latest version can be used as a plugin for Photoshop and Lightroom, but I don't know if it works with PSP. Maybe someone else knows.

Just on FF and the 3000x3000 limit on the standard edition. For my work I don't find it an issue. https://500px.com/brucetreloar I use Photoline as my go to editor. I have a simple action that will resize an image to no more than 3000 pixels. And another action that will restore the result back to its original size. (You can 'tile' images and keep your original size). Read the comparison table at the bottom of the FF Buy window.
Even though I use PL as my go to editor you should get the same results using PSP.
FF takes a while to get your mind around its functions/concepts. But once you grasp the concept it's a world of fun. In theory FF should be able to replicate any other plugin on the market.

I'll have to wait until I get around to reinstalling FF v.4 to see if it has the 3000px limit. But likely it won't matter to me. :-)

JCBrown, thanks for the link and info about On1.

@Joe
* Abstract Curves
* Auto-FX
* Lokas
* Mehdi - updating old plugins to 64-bit on a regular basis
* Redfield
* Richard Roseman
* Xero - brought out 64-bit just before it closed down, but I have a working copy

These are all free filters. There might be more out there if you pay for them.

Flaming Pear's Superblade Pro 64bit
And
Perfectly Clear 64bit works as well.

Most 32 bit plugins will work in the 64 bit version with the bridge plugins.
