Re: Does anyone get image thumbnail icons on .pspimage files
It makes me wonder if X7's uninstaller has anything to do with it. I mean, probably not but I am curious. As so many have said it happened after removing X7 or X8. Like those uninstallers don't check to see if they should keep it there. Or if other installers do check if it already exists and then don't register their own.
The only way I can think of to test all of this out and see what happens is to uninstall everything and start from scratch watching the results. Corel could do it better of course. xD
Just curious, as, again, I haven't read this entire thread. Did anyone try repairing their install of PSP? Or did everyone just try uninstalling and reinstalling?

I uninstalled X7 for another reason and my thumbnails disappeared, and came back when I reinstalled. Then I posted my results here.

I don't think I asked my question properly, I do apologize for that.
If uninstalling X7 caused the thumbnails to disappear we can probably assume that it unregisters the DLL or deletes it and Windows uninstalls it as a result. But if you still have other versions of PSP on your system, have you tried to repair one of these other installs to see if it registers its own version of the DLL?

Re: Does anyone get image thumbnail icons on .pspimage files
LeviFiction a question???
If you use Win Unistall then why would the file from the x8 folder be affected?
Second if you used Corels uninstall/cleanup tool then why does it affect the same file? Or does it?
These are questions coming from someone who keeps everything as simple as possible. Thus uninstalling x7 would have been via the Windows Uninstall. Reinstalling x7 was, for me, the simplest solution.

Re: Does anyone get image thumbnail icons on .pspimage files
Technically the file in x8 should not be affected. Why it was missing for some is a mystery to me. Unsure if the file never existed or if something else happened. Take my install for example, I had X7 and X8 installed. I then installed 2018. I uninstalled X7 and X8 some time later. Now 2018 still had the file, but the file was unregistered. This to me seems at least a bit more reasonable than the file disappearing. It would mean one of two scenarios.
1) All subsequent installs saw that a PSP DLL was already registered and never registered their own versions
or
2) X7 upon uninstall unregistered the dll without paying attention to which one it was.
Both actually seem far fetched but they are the only things I can think of as being slightly plausible for why uninstalling X7 seemed to cause a problem. If the others never registered then uninstalling X7 would simply unregister X7's version of the DLL before deleting it.
If the file doesn't exist in your install of X8, then that is a different head scratcher altogether. Is it a failed install? Did something else remove it like anti-virus? By attempting to use repair on X8 after uninstalling x7 it might be possible that the extension would be recreated and registered.
That's the point of my questions though. I'm just as much in the dark as all of you. I'm offering ideas and asking questions trying to track down possibilities. But in the end, only Corel would really know. And even they may not have a good clue. xD
Now the cleanup tool is dangerous and should only be used if a reinstall doesn't work, and only after uninstalling the reinstall. A tool of last resort. I'm uncertain how it effects other installations of PSP. Though since each install should have its own copy of this file I really can't see why the cleanup tool would target it in multiple file locations. That really makes no sense.

Re: Does anyone get image thumbnail icons on .pspimage files
No I haven't. I was using X7 to make custom brushes and removed it to get rid of the large popup from Corel that took up a quarter of my laptop screen. Then I found out how to get rid of the ad from a post here. My issue is fixed to my satisfaction.LeviFiction wrote:I don't think I asked my question properly, I do apologize for that.

As far as what happened: my take is that with every new version of PSP, Corel breaks something that worked in previous versions. It is either a bug or a "feature."

Yep - this sounds like a great plan to me. I might post a link to this thread on the Corel / PaintShop Twitter feed. Who knows... someone there might even read it!bruce1951 wrote:OK let us assume LeviFiction has found the problem.
1/ We need to know why the file is not registering.
2/ If it has registered and has stopped work, (as seems to have happened to me with x8), what is causing it to stop working.
3/ We need a quick simple fix for the non computer literate folks.
I would hope Corel could have a look at the issue and see if they could either build a check process into PSP or offer a patch which would allow users to resort the file.

This issue (post-reboot this morning) is still resolved, so massive thanks again to you, @LeviFiction!

I'd like to throw my thanks out to LeviFiction also! Registering that DLL corrected the display problem for me too!

Can't see pspimage thumbs in Explorer
I have been around the web and found nothing that definitively helped. I tried a search here and it did not let me search.
Some time back I suddenly could not see _some_ pspimages in Win 7 Explorer. I _think_ it may be after I installed PSP 2018.
The weird thing is, I can see some images' thumbs and not others. I am not sure what the criterion (or criteria) is (are) to decide this. I thought it may be editing in PSP 2018, but I have tried both 32 bit and 64 bit and I cannot make a thumb disappear.
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks for any help.

This thread had a suggestion for a solution by Levifiction on page 5 and 6
viewtopic.php?f=56&t=63186&start=60
Can you try that and report back if it succeeded for you, possibly adding to that thread .

This is LeviFiction's suggestion on the issue. He made it on page 5 of this thread, and it contains all the necessary information. The following discussion on pp. 5 - 6 expand on it, and various people report that it worked. But as I say, this contains all the information you need to know:

I realize I'm late to the party, and don't have the energy to read all 4 pages, but here's a random thought. Fair warning, thumbnails work on my system so this is all speculation I have not tried this myself.
Can you check to see if the PSPThumbnail extractor shell extension is loaded?
https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
That link will take you to nirsoft's Shell Extension Viewer. Just download the zip and run the program. It'll provide a list of all shell extensions loaded into windows.
shellexviewer.jpg
Here you can see mine, and my thumbnails work great with PSP8, PSPPXI, PSPPX2, PSPX8, PSPX9, and PSP2018.
Next check if the extension is exists on your harddrive, scroll to the right to find the filename of the shell extension. It doesn't show it in my screenshot but you can find which file is the one registered. Does that file still exist on your computer? If it doesn't exist, you may need to register the PSPThumbnail extractor from one of your other installations. The filename is PSPPThumbShellExt64.dll and can be found in the root folder of any PSP install.
To register the thumbnail viewer open a command prompt as administrator.
Then type
regsvr32 c:\path\to\shellextension.dll
Does this help?

OK. I tried that. (Wow...this needs to be fixed so I am not a hacker, bit a photo editor!)
The info for the thumbs extractor was
PSPThumbExtractor Class No Thumbnail PSP Thumbnail Shell Extension 20.0.0.1 Corel PaintShop Pro Corel Software, Inc. No No No No No No c:\Program Files\Corel\Corel PaintShop Pro 2018 (64-bit)\PSPPThumbShellExt64.dll {35C5E9BD-9716-4b2a-9EDE-C7C304159F03} 29/09/2017 8:36:08 PM 13/03/2018 7:36:25 PM No .Psp, .PspFrame, .PspImage, .PspShape, .PspTube, .Tub A 2,697,144 No No
As I understand it, I am supposed to enter under the cmd window
regsvr32 c:\Program Files\Corel\Corel PaintShop Pro 2018 (64-bit)\PSPPThumbShellExt64.dll
This failed, saying that I needed to check the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems the binary or dependent .dll files. The specified binary could not be found.

OldNick... You need to run the cmd window as admin. The easiest way is to type cmd in the search box, and then right-click on 'Command Prompt when it appears, selecting "Run as administrator'
Then you can run your regsvr32 command
Then you can run your regsvr32 command
