A general corruption of the parts of the registry that deals with the thumbnails could happen.

But it would normally be easily fixable. Just by restoring the associations. That it isn't, is a Corel issue.

As others have stated, I find this an intermittent issue, sometimes the thumbs show, at other times not. So, instead of beating my head against a wall I use PSP Manage mode and always see the thumbs.

Seeing as I still ONLY get this issue with PaintShop Pro (nb. CorelDraw thumbnails are fine / no issues there..) - I am unsure who is to "blame" - I just wish the pspimage thumbs displayed !!!

For those who have the problem this would seem like a sensible solution.

All very well to dismiss it as a 'minor' issue. But when you are searching through Explorer looking for a file it's a real PITA. I have many variations of the one file. Both PSPImage and Photoline images. The only way to compare each image is to open them. When you have 5 or 6 images that don't show in a thumbnail opening to compare them becomes a bore.

I would say with 99% certainty it's a Win issue and not a Corel/PSP or Photoline issue. Unless both companies broke into my house and both made changes to my system at the same time!!!!!!!

No the answer is somewhere within the bowels of Windows.

@Bruce. I believe you're right re: deep in the bowels of Windows. It has been a LONG time now since I've had them (over several versions of PSP) but I'm almost certain when I first took the plunge with Windows 10.x the PaintShop Pro thumbnails WERE still fine for native .pspimage images. THAT'S the part I find most frustrating.

It is a fair point and suggestion/solution, Joe. It would just require a "culture" / process change for me as even though I've used PSP for (literally) decades, I've never used the "Manage" mode. Also, stating the obvious but the software also has to be loaded in order to use that, vs. considerably more convenient casual browsing through pspimage files in Windows Explorer..

Yes, of course. I was thinking of how many people seem to prefer dragging files from Windows Explorer into the PSP workspace for editing rather than using the Manage option in the program. But if you're just doing casual browsing of the files without planning to edit then it would definitely be nice if you could see the actual .pspimage in Explorer.

There are some thumbnail viewers out there. However the few I have tried don't impress me.

I'm one of those who prefers dragging from Windows 10's File Explorer only because I can see more thumbnails all at once similar to my old PSP versions' "Browse" feature.

Yes, my .pspimage files are visible as thumbnails on Windows 10. The thumbnail image shows with a tiny Corel icon in the lower right corner. I cannot replicate the problems others are having. I doubt it's a Windows problem. If you have used registry cleaners and/or so-called "optimizers" they can create more problems than they claim to fix. You just don't realize anything is wrong until you try to use some app and notice it's not doing what you want it to. Of course, the app or Windows always gets blamed.

I don't get that result on my monitor. With PSP 2018, full screen, in Manage mode and the navigation panel open at left and the Zoom set to minimum I get 90 thumbnail images that are the same size as the thumbnails I get in Windows Explorer with Large Icons as the view mode and the explorer file tree at left. And in Explorer I only get 54 icons of that size. Using the Small Icons view in Explorer I find those icons too small to be useful, and even then I only get 96 icons that, as stated, are too small to be useful for me.

It appears that you are on a ThinkCentre. I'm on a ThinkPad T480s with a smaller screen, so maybe that is the difference. I
couldn't get the icons small enough in Manage to view a large number of them without having to scroll. I work on multiple images in layers at the same time. Going back and forth between Manage to hunt for them and Edit to work on them was too time consuming. Therefore I set a preferred workspace with Edit as default and don't use the other tabs. Maybe I'm not doing something right, or maybe I just got too accustomed to having navigation/browse on my workspace and opening additional images with one click. I'm open to suggestions if there is a more efficient way to do it.

Just to add another twist to the thumbnail saga!!

I have a work laptop that is running Win 8.1. This is my editing computer. Some weeks back I lost the ability to see PSPImage files in Explorer. At the same time I also lost the ability to see Photoline images in Explorer. Coincidence?

I also have a desk top computer I do all my printing from. That computer runs Win 7.

Now I have identical setups of both PSPx8 and Photoline on both computers.

Today I started to print a large order for a client. So I transferred master image files from the laptop, Win 8.1, computer over to the Win 7 computer. Every PSPImage and every Photoline file/thumbnail is now visible in Explorer on the Win 7 computer.

The answer is in Windows. But what is the answer????

Thanks for this, Bruce - intriguing!

My personal theory is that the "solution" is something to do with a combination of two factors:

1. Windows updates
2. Where a person has had multiple (historical) versions/releases/patches etc. of PaintShop Pro installed on the same computer

I think a combination of this factors is what has caused the issue *except* for these folks who seem to have the thumbnail issue (for pspimage formatted files) intermittently.

For me, it's a black and white "No pspimage thumbnails" (at all). - they don't "Sometimes" appear.. they've effectively gone forever (as things stand).

I've tried literally everything - but no joy. So frustrating for what should surely be a simple issue for Corel, or MicroSoft (or both) to resolve. They MUST know it is a Known Issue, surely...?

Ok I have a Desktop computer and three choices of C drive running Windows 10:

1 Windows 10 Version 1607 build 14393.7007 shows all pspfile thumbs and with PSP 2018 v 20.0.0.132 the map function does not work :D

2. Windows 10 version 1703 build 15063.413 and originally that did not show pspfile thumbs until I installed PSP 2018 v 20.2.0.1 and now all thumbs show and the map function works. :D

3. Windows 10 version 1709 build 16299.125 and with PSP 2018 v 20/2.0.1 that shows all thumbs and the map function works. :D

All versions still have the disastrous crop tool stuff up though.
