The file associations should be handled by a reinstall. :hmm:

Yep.. except that it doesn't work! I _thought_ I'd sussed it earlier on this morning - as I suddenly remembered the options WITHIN PaintShop Pro for File Associations.

I went here: File > Preferences > File Format Associations - and then scrolled to the attached.

See how ".pspimage" has a "block" and not a tick? I'm assuming this is because it is the "Native" file format - but can someone else check this and let me know on their system?

Note: When I first went on here, the box was NOT ticked... BINGO!!! I thought. I ticked the box, saved the change, closed PaintShop Pro and...

... absolutely no difference what. so. EVER! :(

So close.. and yet, so far..

John.

I don't have a solution for you but I can answer some of your questions.

Yes, I see icons on pspimage files.

When I first looked at file associations there was no block in pspimage.

Thanks for taking the time to show these settings, Kathy.

One quick favour for me please! Can you double-click on the "pspimage" entry - and then show me a screen-grab of the following screen?

Mine looks like this (see image attachment).

Now, the interesting thing here is the asterisk / * symbol.

I thought/assumed that this was because it was set as "Preferred" (which is what I want, fine).

However.. if I select ".psp" from the list then then THAT as "Preferred", when I go out and back in, the "pspimage" entry still has the "*" next to it - even though at that point ".psp" HAS been accepted as the preferred extension.

I'm therefore wondering if the * means something else - e.g. a problem.

What do you see on this sub-screen? Thanks! John.

I know you said a reinstall didn't help but have you tried a reset to default? Here's the instructions in case you need them. They reference X6 but work for all versions.

FWIW my PSPImage thumbnails have once again vanished. This time I can't get them back at all.
A few days back I opened my PSPx8 while I was connected to the internet. Something I NEVER do. Since that time I have two issues. First is the loss of thumbnails. (I've followed a zillion web pages on the same subject). Second I now have popup advertisement for PSPx8 sp3. No matter what I do to PSP settings I can't stop the pop up/advertisement. These message prevent PSPx8 opening and closing without clicking on something.

I use PSPx8 as an external editor from within Photoline. If I invoke PSPx8 from within Photoline the pop appears the first time PSPx8 is opened. Once opened no popup.

Help/Message Preferences does nothing. Waste of time even having it as an option.

Now I've been a PSP user since Jasc days. But I'm almost at the stage now that I will remove PSP, all versions, from my computers. Corel is annoying their users so much that they are driving them away. But I guess they are too thick to understand what they are doing.

Bruce. Interesting to hear about this development. Sometime recently my own PC has also been blighted by that incredibly annoying and intrusive promotional message. It has sometimes loaded and appeared on Windows 10 even when Paint Shop Pro has not been opened! WTF?!

My own thumbnails have still yet to return, even having finally successfully updated Windows 10 to the Fall creators update...

My level of expertise and experience with PSP means I am effectively stuck with it. Such a shame as the core program itself is still perfect for my needs. Corel are, however seriously pushing their luck..

Since this is a Corel PSP forum and the discussion is all about PSP, it is easiest to blame all problems on Corel and the perceived poor coding of PSP. But I wonder to what degree the problems are due to other factors, such as Microsoft's interpretation of the thumbs. The windows explorer I use virtually all the time is xplorer2 from Zabkat because of the features it offers. I can see .pspimage thumbs using that tool but not using Microsoft's Windows Explorer. Edit!I went back to Microsoft Windows Explorer and now it shows the .pspimage thumbs, see attached - go figure.

Another example, A couple of weeks ago the internet display for a newspaper I subscribe to stopped working as it had in the past. I got in touch with the paper and they suggested the usual deleting cookies etc. which did not work. I checked my versions of Win 10 and Chrome and that seemed to lead nowhere. I had to reboot the computer yesterday and the version of Win 10 changed after the reboot and now all works o.k. Bruce, I know you do not use Win 10 but other aspects of computers can cause the problems we experience. There is no way Corel can keep up with the changes taking place, they have a hard enough time fixing bugs that have been identified in their programs.

But there is no excuse for inflicting the ads on us.

I don't have PSP2018, am still using PSPX9, on a Windows 10 system.

I point the finger of blame at Microsoft, why? On my system .Pspimage files show images, then icons, then images, all in the space of half an hour, it seems the system can't make up it's mind.
That didn't happen before Windows 10 . (A lot of nasties didn't happen before Windows 10, grrr)
Microsoft have an unpleasant habit of thinking they're always right and feel that their customers should obey their rules.
Not popular in my book.

When looking at folders with .Pspimage files in them, I often hit the F5 key to refresh the page, which (not always) shows the images :-)

I can't help with the thumbnail images (pspimage files show up fine as thumbnails in Explorer on my system) but maybe with the messages info. After you have turned off messages in Message Preferences, try going to C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\Corel\Messages. Delete that Messages folder completely - there is nothing in it that you need.

If you still get the update reminder after that, there is a file in the Corel X8 program folder called dim.exe. Rename it to something like dim.BAK and then running X8 and see if you still get the reminder. Somebody in the Corel Draw forum identified it (through Task Manager) of being responsible for an update popup he was getting. I have it renamed and X8 runs fine without it.

Let us know if that solves your issue.

Thanks everyone.
The thumbnail issue is a Windows issue. Because it affects other programs. Not just PSP.

The pop up IS a Corel issue.

JoeB I've followed your suggestions. I still get the popup.

Sorry to hear that. I only have 32bit X8 installed because I decided not to use it. I have, however, installed the SP3 that just came out. I don't get any popups, reminders, etc. when opening or closing X8. Of course, that applies to my X7, X9 and 2018 also.

I don't think that's right.

It may affect other types of file. (Although I've only ever had it affect .pspimage fwiw.) I frequent a lot of support forums, and this is the only one where it comes up ever few days. VLC for example is something that you would expect to have this problem, if it were a problem. it is definitely a Corel/PSP issue. The thumbs are generated by PSP itself. And Corel could and should release a fix tool.

Usually about once a year I lose my thumbs, usually I can't be bothered to reinstall so I just upgrade.

Flagpole I have the very same issues with Photoline images/files. Both PSP and Photoline thumbnails changed at the same time. So how are PSP and Photoline connected in such a way that both suffered the same problem at the same time. Also there are many many threads on Google about the same issue.

Corel have annoyed the #$#@ out of me lately but I'm sure this is not of Corels making.
