Does anyone get image thumbnail icons on .pspimage files?
Hi there.
A long-standing minor... yet irritating issue I have had with the past "few" (at least two..) versions of PaintShop Pro.
I'm currently on PaintShop Pro 2018 - and with Windows 10.x Pro (with all updates *except* the Fall Creators Update (which somehow broke ALL my Corel software - but nothing else (but that's another story / unrelated here, as I already this particular issue BEFORE updating to the Fall Creators Update).
The issue I have is simple: I no longer get "thumbnail" icons for native ".pspimage" files created using PaintShop Pro.
Instead, I simply get a generic PaintShop pro icon.
Before anyone asks, YES! I *do* have Windows set to show thumbnails (and not "Always" icons) - and I've also rebuilt my Windows Icons Cache countless times (it makes no difference).
I've also reinstalled the software and tried to "deep clean" a former installation (off my system) using Revo Uninstaller (highly reliable).
So.. my question for starters is:
CAN PaintShop Pro 2018 actually generate thumbnail images for native ".pspimage" files? I know for sure it used to (and I find that very useful!).
Does anyone on here have a) Windows 10.x and b) PaintShop Pro 2018 - and CAN see thumbnail images as file icons for ".pspimage" documents/files?
Please advise, we can then take it from there!

Re: Does anyone get image thumbnail icons on .pspimage files
PS - I should have added that I've already read through most (all?) previous threads on this topic / issue - and NONE of the guides have worked for me sadly. (inc. rebuilding the icons and thumbnails cache AND removing them using that convoluted but effective method via Windows 10.x "Power Shell" (deleting thumbnail and icon caches) - THAT process worked... but then I'm STILL left with a generic "blue camera" icon for ALL of my ".pspimage" files created using PaintShop Pro 2018 and also earlier versions.
Does anyone have any (more) ideas??? It's such a minor issue (overall) yet drives me _nuts_.
John.

Re: Does anyone get image thumbnail icons on .pspimage files
I have PSPX9 on Windows 10 (don't like W10 very much..) and the .pspimage files show as thumbnails.
I found this, which might be helpful, but it looks like you have already done that.

Mystic Thumbs (not expensive) might be helpful too.
Having said all that, Corel should make sure that .pspimage files can been seen in Windows 10 without the user having to jump through hoops.

I have many versions of PSP and for awhile I had trouble in seeing PSP thumbs, but eventually it worked itself out and they all show in Windows explorer - not sure which activity / change eventually caused them all to show.

I use Win10 and have never had problems with thumbs displaying for .pspimage files. This topic has come up a number of times and I've never experienced this problem, I wish I knew what is different.

Hi Mark (and all who have also replied).MarkZ wrote:I use Win10 and have never had problems with thumbs displaying for .pspimage files. This topic has come up a number of times and I've never experienced this problem, I wish I knew what is different.
It IS a really weird problem. I've had (literally) every version of PaintShop Pro since waaaaay back to the "JASC" (pre-Corel!) days.
In the past (pre-Windows 10.x - which I should add I've had no other issues with) - I always had thumbnails for ".pspimage" files. All good.
In fact, unless I'm mistaken (could be..) I *think* they still worked up to around version X6 (and that may well have been on Windows 10.x).
Then, all of a sudden - *GONE* - pspimage documents are still correctly "associated" with PaintShop, but the icon I get is this (see attached image to this post).
So Corel KNOWS it is a Corel PaintShop Pro image file (good) - BUT these are never thumbnails!!
I do tend to name files properly/well - but even then as you can imagine it feels like a big disadvantage to not be able to "see" what the contents of a pspimage is without opening it
Thanks again for your input. I've recently read that people with this as a long-standing issue have seen it go away with the "Fall Creators Update" for Windows 10.x.
Sadly that is probably a no-go for me, as although (as usual) THAT update installed fine (for Windows itself) it then completely broke my installations of PaintShop Pro AND CorelDraw Graphics Suite 2017! (literally no other software was affected... completely bizarre!) - I can't remember at that time if pspimage thumbnails were "back" - but even if they were, I couldn't open anything!

Hi there. Thanks for this reply. When you say you "have many versions.." do you mean they are installed on the same PC (still) - OR that you've *had* many versions (over the years) - but only have one installed presently?hartpaul wrote:I have many versions of PSP and for awhile I had trouble in seeing PSP thumbs, but eventually it worked itself out and they all show in Windows explorer - not sure which activity / change eventually caused them all to show.
Keen to know as if it is the former scenario that could be a clue (I have only the latest version/release and build - but have had (literally) ALL prior versions from around 3.x onwards (!!!).
Not all those were on the current PC or O/S of course - but wondering if there could be fragments of (say..) X6 which are breaking thumbnails for me (somehow).
Oh, and all other formats DO have thumbs (e.g. .png) and so on - this issue only affects my native ".pspimage" files... of which I create a LOT!

Re: Does anyone get image thumbnail icons on .pspimage files
FWIW. I have had issues with PSPImage files showing as a Corel/PSP icon on and off with various versions of PSP and Windows. I recently had computer crash and swapped over to another computer. At first I had just the same issue. My PSPImage files appeared as Icons and not thumbnails. I re did file associations and generally fiddle with Windows setting. I got the thumbnails back.
But before everyone asks what I did well I don't know. Because my Photoline files are doing exactly the same. My thumbnails have been replaced by an icon. But repeating what I thought I did for the PSP thumbnails hasn't worked for the Photoline files.
All I can tell is that the secret is hidden within Windows and not PSP.

Thanks for this, which is good to know and also fits in with my own theory too (as were it a "Corel" problem I'm sure they'd have resolved it by now). Until recently I actually "Lost" thumbnails on CorelDraw too - however, THAT was (eventually..!) explained by for some reason for "Corel Graphics Shell Extension" program having not installed (on an otherwise entirely successful installation of CorelDraw... weird!).
I manually tracked down the installer - run it.. and hey presto! I once again has thumbnails for ".cdr" native CorelDraw files.
I briefly got my hopes up thinking that the "Shell Extension" might also be connected to my PSP issue.. but alas, sadly not - CDR files are OK, but "pspimage" ones are still thumbnail-less!
Aarrgghh.

Re: Does anyone get image thumbnail icons on .pspimage files
Yes I have them all on the same main computer and also on my main Laptop. I have two other laptops with them all JascPSP8, Corel X2, X3...X9 on them and also separate internal hard drives running XP (does not run some of the later versions of PSP) , Win 7, Win 8.1 and also some extra HDD with Win 10 version 1703 and Win10 Version 1709. So I can test most combinations of those systems and versions of PSP.mounsey wrote:Hi there. Thanks for this reply. I seem to remember that the thumbs became visible after I installed a version of PSP , not sure which one but possibly X9.
I also note strangely that when I do thumbnails in Irfanview of that previous post I only get PSP8, X2, X3 and X8.

Uninstall and reinstall is the only way I know of to fix it.
I've never known it not work though. Corel would really release a fix tool.

Thanks for the tip - though sadly I've already uninstalled and reinstalled numerous times (inc. using 3rd party "Deep Clean" style uninstallers too e.g. "Revo" etc.flagpole wrote:Uninstall and reinstall is the only way I know of to fix it.

PS when you've reinstalled etc. have you used the "Clean-up" tool provided by Corel (on these forums somewhere) for removal of additional PSP stuff that might get left behind re: normal Uninstall?flagpole wrote:Uninstall and reinstall is the only way I know of to fix it.

Of all the things I've tried I can't remember if I've tried that or not.

If you Google "show thumbnails Win ?" , where ? is your version, you will get numerous answers. You also need to check you computers 'file associations'.
