Blank Screen MPEG won't run but data there

Post by scotty »

Hello Newbie to this column, I have serached for this problem among other postings with no success.
I have VS8, captured and edited a project fine (DV-AVI), preview jittery (866Mhz 5 year old Dell PC!!) but works with out a crash.
Tried burning straight to DVD had a problem (wouldn't recognise blank DVD was there) read the sticky on correct opertions and changed tack.
First of all I created a Videofile (variable 3000mbs) through share etc. and got a 500Mb MPEG file, but with LCPM audio. I ran the video file in WMP but no audio because it had a sperate audio file.
Decided to start again, loaded all the updates in sequence and changed preferences, recaptured Video. Found out afterwards must of mousewheeeled audio to 12 bit 32KHz instead of 48 KHz!
However all ran ok created 6000 mbs file, producing just over 1Gig Mpeg2 file. In WMP get a blank screen, says it is playing but no counter movement even though it shows the correct total time.
I play it in VS and the same blank screen & no movement on the counter, however if I pause and scan through the file all the frames are there?
Surely the audio difference isn't causing the problem?
This is for a present for my wife for Thursday so I am running out of time!! Any clues please?

Hi scotty
Just to confirm. Did you capture via a Firewire to dv-avi

This will give you a file about 13 Gb for one hour.

From File Preferences select ‘Show messages when inserting first video’
This is useful as it prompts you to match the capture to the project settings.

Bit rate
For up to 60 minutes 8000 kb/s
For up to 90 minutes 6000kb/s
For up to 120 minutes 4000kb/s

After editing it is recommended to create a video file, If you want to change the audio properties you will have to produce your own templates or use the ‘custom’ option,
Otherwise use the default Pal-Dvd.

You can view the settings in the info box prior to making file, should be something like:--

MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo

You use the completed file to burn a Dvd.

Look at my quick guide to Avi and Mpeg capture from the link below

Hope this helps

Hello trevor thanks for the reply.

I captured Firewire form Sony TRV-33 works well. I got about the 13Gb/hour rate.
When doing the settings the only way I found to set the capture settings was to alter the project settings, whilst in the capture tab. I hadn't opened a project but it seemed to work. I accidentally selected the wrong audio but other than that it seemed to alter the capture settings; as follows;

MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
MPEG Audio, 32000 Hz 12 bit, Stereo

The files (split by scene) captured fine no problems there, and edited fine.
I didn't open up a new project, on selecting the first video file it loaded all the others in as well. Is this correct?

When generating the video file I changed all the settings via custom ( as stated in the sticky instructions) however the audio was fixed as 48 KHz
Only I set 6000 kb/s to get a decent sized file but not too big as I am running out of disk space (160Gb external hard drive due today!) for DVD I will set 8000 and burn that.

1) Have I set the capture settings by the correct method (I could not find any other way)
2) Do you have to open a new project ( I could not set the "show messages when inserting first video" as the files came into the default project automatically on viewing the first one)

I will just look at your link ......

Hi Scotty

If you captured using Split by Scene then you captured to Dv-Avi.
After capture is terminated all clips will be placed in the timeline in order.
Also a thumbnail of all clips will be placed in the library, create a new blank page for these.
(provided you selected the library, from the options cogwheel.)

The capture settings can be seen below the preview window these are from your camera properties and cannot be changed.
The only capture options you can change are Dv-Type 1 or 2 select Dv-Type 1 from the options cogwheel.

You should have no need to recapture the footage, what you have in Dv-Avi is correct.

The clips in the timeline are only a link to the captured files.
Right click a clip in the timeline and select properties, these are your captured clip properties, and should reflect Avi files.
The audio attributes are what are set on your camera.

Editing does not alter the captured files, but creates links to them.

Once you have finished editing you create a video file that should fit on one Dvd.
The bit rate is the main control for the size of your finished file.

Audio Ntsc uses a lot of memory compared to Mpeg audio.
Mpeg therefore allows more room for the video clip / disc.

When Creating the Video File you need to use a template that will compress the file to fit a dvd.

These are typical settings needed for a 90 minute video.

MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: 6000 kbps
Audio data rate: 224 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo

Rendering will take a long time, so try to get the settings right.

How long is your Video :?:

Hope this helps

Trevor, thanks for your help the mist is starting to clear ...
Your website was informative and answered a few things as well.
The actual movie I am doing is about 25 mins so 8000 bps will be ok when I receive my external hard drive!
I already create a new directory for a new project, but the library blank page sounds like a good idea as well.
I use the DV type1 (as suggested) for capture sounds like thats ok.
The files captured are AVI, I will look into the camera for the audio settings.
So if the importance of linking the settings with the final DVD settings is paramount;
If my video is 32 Khz audio should the project settings be 32kHz or the 48kHz as in the final MPEG audio for DVD burning (which greys out at 48kHz)?

Other than the audio issue I have the same settings that you suggested in your last post. Although I may ultimately change the data rate for DVD.
My question is what do I do now to get over the black screen MPEG which I created yesterday? Does the directX driver or CODEC need changing? Seems strange as the first MPEG2 I created (without sound)! played.

Thanks in advance.

Hi scotty
I would normally have my project settings the same as the captured video:-

PAL (25 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 16:9, 25 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- PAL, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

After editing Create a video File using the Pal-Dvd template.
But this defaults to the US audio standard LPCM.

I want to use Digital Dolby and have to either create my own template, or use the custom option.
I prefer to make my own template from Tools—Make Movie Manager.

To:-

MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: 8000 kbps
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

The resulting video file being used to create a disc.

Ok
The white screen is a bit of a mystery. But without knowing the video clip properties it is hard to comment.
I would ensure you have a good file before you start looking at codec’s
But as it appear to have incompatible audio,(32 /48 Kb) you will have to render again to ensure you have a Dvd compliant file.

You may have to render the full project again, which is going to take time. Dv-Avi to Mpeg
You may be able to re-render the Mpeg2 file.(Mpeg To Mpeg) should be quicker.

Start a new project
Place the Mpeg file into the timeline,
Share –Create video File
Custom—Use the settings above.
or use the template created above.

Trevor,
Thanks for all your help it really did stop me going right round the houses!
95% success last night. Still can't view MPEG2's in VS or WMP.
Not even with just converting one AVI clip, no titles, etc.
However tried MPEG1 and that worked fine.
Therefore went for glory with a 4 min clip, titles, audio track added
and saved to DVD - hey presto perfect !
External hard drive turned up so tonight I will go for full 8000bps and 25 mins. The pride in seeing your movie up on TV is immense isn't it?

Therefore I assume it is the MPEG2 decoder on my machine. I did have a DVD player on my machine but when I upgraded from 98SE to XPsp2 it would not work. I ran the microsoft check program and there is a Ulead converter but the movie wont play in either VS or WMP. I can load it and manually scroll through the movie in VS but not play. I have a DVD player that works on Win2000 at work I will see if that has any success.

But in the meantime its all systems go, wedding anniversary on Thursday and I will have a movie of my daughters first 5 months from birth - now my bacon is saved! Thanks again.

Hi Scotty

Glad to hear its all coming together.
Do you have Nero burning software, usually comes bundled with the dvd burner.

If you have it includes a Dvd player.

All the best for Thursday

Hi Trevor,

No I bought my Sony OEM, it came with some sony software which was a bit naff but became redundant when I upgraded to XP anyway.
I have heard nero is the tops for burning but the VS looks fine so far so don't want to shell out for it, unless I am missing a trick?

I found a website from Cliprex offering DVD playing software for free,
don't know what its like but says it has codecs for MPEG2 included.
Might try that tonight, but will concentrate on getting the project finished first!

Again many thanks couldn't of done it with your help. :D

Trevor,

Burnt the DVD last night and all went well.
Except still can not view MPEG2's even loading the Powerdvd did not work.
Therefore I could not set chapters, no big deal in this case though.
My main fear is VS uses its own CODEC so loading another shouldn't effect it. I have started another thread on this single issue to see what happens.

Thanks again

Scotty
