Slow loading times in VideoStudioX10

Hey all

so I'm having fun learning how to video edit and hopefully become a productive "content creator" on youtube. My PC is very stout, I'd like to think, the stats are somewhere on here since I put them in as I registered, but just in case they're a PITA to find:

i5-6600k @4.2ghz
2x8GB DDR4 Corsair Vengeance LED 3200mhz RAM
250GB SSD - OS and main programs
1TB HDD "Blue" - games
multiple 4TB WD external HDs - namely a 4TB WD "Passport" https://www.wdc.com/products/portable-s ... 40BRD-WESN that is where all my recordings are passed on to and I load said recordings from the external into VS10, and save my VS10 work there as well.

when I was testing the demo of VS10, I foolishly was only using my SSD. Now that I'm using my external HD, everything has slowed down, glacially. Once things are loading into VS10, everything is fine, but no joke it takes 30+ seconds to load into the "Mask Creator" window.

so my question, and hope and pints of your favorite on me if we fix it,

is how do I get some speed back - without resorting to my SSD?

I've a system very similar to yours and running off an external HDD or even a NAS works as long as I use proxy files. Are you using proxies?
