cropped moving overlay with drop shadow

Post by sambucadog »

I am struggling with creating a certain effect, can't help but think I overlooked something simple and obvious!
I am using X10. I would like to have a still frame with drop shadow float over a background, moving from left to right. Background is in video track, still frame is in overlay layer. The still frame is a vertical format, which means it has black on both sides. I have cropped that out and sized the image with the cropping filter, then applied motion through pan and zoom. This works. The problem is applying a drop shadow. It is applying the drop shadow to the full framed still (i.e. includes where the black bands were), not the cropped image. Also, if I try to apply a border, it does the same thing..applies it to the original uncropped area. Am I missing something?
Thanks in advance!

Have you tried using Customise Motion
Right click the clip for option
Customise motion can animate your image move across screen and apply drop shadow.

If your original image does contain black borders (seems strange) you may be best cropping that out using an image editor.

There are other FX filters that could do what you need, maybe Picture-in-Picture.

Very interesting. When I control the motion via "Apply Pan and Zoom" (under Attribute) on a vertical still pic overlay, it adds the black on each side which then becomes part of the overlay, and that's why I had to crop it within VS...the original jpg does not contain these black borders. When I did as you suggested, using "Customise Motion" (and unchecking "Apply Pan and Zoon" box), it does not add the black borders and I can put a drop shadow on it. Thanks! I will have to make note of that and not use pan and zoom in this manner!
