Re: PSP 2018 Slow Load or No Load
Thanks Juergen, very interesting. Puzzling why a similar difference doesn’t arise here with PSP 2018.

No idea. I recommend using/watching of "resmon ...overview ...disk+network unfolded" while starting.
Good luck, regards, Jürgen

With Defender options OFF, I still see a few entries containing 'Defender'. Is that to be expected?juergen wrote:No idea. I recommend using/watching of "resmon ...overview ...disk+network unfolded" while starting.

Re: PSP 2018 Slow Load or No Load
I don't know.
I think yes, if only a few ressources are used.
Be sure that the cloud based check is off, also the on-access-scanner while testing, then i think the rest should not matter.
You can also exclude explicit directories from the check... (don't know if in every version)...
Regards, Jürgen
PS: Have seen the protocols of procmon, but i haven't seen anything (but i am not a windows expert, only using it since 1985)

Re: PSP 2018 Slow Load or No Load
I got to wondering if one major cause of the serious performance problem I'm getting with PaintShop Pro 2018 (and lesser degradation in other programs) is down to the patches for the Intel chip flaws included in recent Win 10 updates.
To explore that I've just uninstalled the 21st Jan security updates KB4056892 and KB4058702.
My first four startups were all about 10 secs!
Don't want to be prematurely optimistic (who knows, maybe MS will automatically install these again) but even those with less extreme times than I've been getting may want to consider the same action.

Anyway the most obvious.
Very good Terry -
so we have the choice what to uninstall...

Re: PSP 2018 Slow Load or No Load
It seems that the same slow down issues PSP2018 is having is the same as other Corel products are having. My slow start issues with X9 started back in December with the Windows 10 Creator update -- before all of the Intel chip patch issues. I went from 5 second start times to 5 minute start times.terrypin wrote:I got to wondering if one major cause of the serious performance problem I'm getting with PaintShop Pro 2018 (and lesser degradation in other programs) is down to the patches for the Intel chip flaws included in recent Win 10 updates.

Re: PSP 2018 Slow Load or No Load
Windows installed both of those again while I had lunch, without my knowledge and without a reboot by me!juergen wrote:Ahh yes, had same thought, but i have forgotten this to check.terrypin wrote:I got to wondering if one major cause of the serious performance problem I'm getting with PaintShop Pro 2018 (and lesser degradation in other programs) is down to the patches for the Intel chip flaws included in recent Win 10 updates.

purgatory or hell

Sure enough, startup was then slow again. So, deciding to try one at a time, I uninstalled KB4058702 again. Next startup was back to 10 sec. Then, reckoning that single update could be the sole cause of my misery, I tried to reinstall KB4056892. But got message "Failed to install on 25/01/2018 - 0x80073715". Haven't fathomed the error or how to fix, but gather this update is thought by many to be buggy.
Latest startup test result was 10 sec - followed by the "Stopped working..." crash. Next two were 11 sec and they stayed up.
For the time being I've blocked all updates.

Re: PSP 2018 Slow Load or No Load
Update KB4058702 or newer do not install yet.
Intel's CPU suffer some errors and Microsoft recomment to wait even with it's own updates...
Both companies are going throught some turbulent/hard times... (since Jan 3rd, 2018).

Re: PSP 2018 Slow Load or No Load
Update KB4058702 has not yet been installed on my computer either. But there's another one which might also be important: KB4078130. In fact, after reading https://www.computerworld.com/article/3 ... tre-2.html I get the impression this one may not be automatically forced on us by Microsoft, but may be one we have to seek out ourselves.
However, that article is itself a bit mysterious about whether we should or not. Could be worth trying, though, especially given Jürgen's experience with those other MS updates...
