Re: Win 10 issues so why stay with Win 10?
I still don't like being 'forced' to keep updated. Heck I hated having to eat my greens. Imagine Ford telling us that our car needs a service every 10000 k. Hang on. They do!!
My biggest issue still is the size of the updates. I live in a city of 600000+ people. Live about 400 meters from a broad band tower. Have reasonably fast internet. But the bandwidth can be very on and off. The cost of data gets out of hand. It's all a matter of those at Microsoft being out of touch with a large proportion of their users. I simply can't imagine how Microsoft thinks they can survive in less fortunate countries.
One day a Chinese company is going to build a computer for $1.00 and have a operating system that will make Microsoft look more than silly. But may not. Or may be yes....

Don't forget, though, that at least some of those "less fortunate countries" have much faster internet services than a lot of developed Western countries...bruce1951 wrote:I simply can't imagine how Microsoft thinks they can survive in less fortunate countries.

You're not forced to update. Your version of Windows 10 will just eventually stop getting security updates. Again, so long as you turn on the setting "Metered internet" you will not be forced to download updates. You can be as secure or insecure as you want. And you don't have to grab the latest full release.
Also, they have that "share your updates" feature where anyone getting an update that is on the same network as someone who already has that update can actually get it from that person rather than downloading off the internet. So those with families would only have to download the full update once for all of their devices.

I actually think the trick is to leave the machine on or sleeping all the time. I seem to get Defender updates every day, and the reliability score sits at 10 all the time.

but to return to the thread topic...
...is an OS like ubuntu really better?
I'm on the security newsletter list from ubuntu, every day updates, updates, updates...
professionally we use several LTS server, but privately i gave it up with the desktop versions - too many programs i would like to run - only under windows...

Re: Win 10 issues so why stay with Win 10?
I guess that depends. If you're confident with the security programs and protocols you practice with your Windows system then exchanging them for another OS with also good security that you think is even better might make you think the new OS is better. But if the new OS can't run all of the programs you wish to use - or do so as well as your present OS - then it's not better for that purpose. So "better" is in the eye - and needs - of the beholder.juergen wrote:but to return to the thread topic...

I don't know if it's a Win 10 Pro thing or home too, but if you go to control panel and then security and maintenance, then expand maintenance, there's a choice of view reliability history. There may be a setting to turn it on and off, but I leave mine on. Seeing a lot of failed updates or other problem would be a reason to investigate further.JoeB wrote:What's a reliability score?CHoffman wrote:I actually think the trick is to leave the machine on or sleeping all the time. Crossover supposedly will run almost any windows app at almost native speed on Linux and Mac. Without the need for a Windows license or virtual machine.
Don't suppose we have any Mac or Linux people who have tried it do w

Re: Win 10 issues so why stay with Win 10?
Yes, by all means purchase the new laptop with Windows 10. One mistake that many people ran into when upgrading was that prior to installing the upgrade they did not bother to update their current systems with drivers/ BIOS, etc.. They also did not bother to check with their OEM to make sure their specific model would be compatible. As a result, they had problems and complained. We have 8 Lenovos in the house. Several were upgrades from Windows 7 or 8, and the most recent three had 10 pre-installed. We've had no problems whatsoever. There are a lot of settings to go through, such as opting for how you want updates delivered, but once you get configurations to your liking, perhaps you will love it as much as I do.bruce1951 wrote:OK just a shot in the dark here.
But if change is coming in the form of a new laptop that has Win 10 on it is it viable to consider an alternative?
