PSP 8 script doesn't work in PSP 2018

Post by terrypin »

A script kindly written for me over ten years ago by Suz Shook has been my most frequently used in PSP 8 since then. Its purpose is to place a 'mailslot' shape around text and fill that with a colour. Unsurprisingly it was the first I've just tested in PSP 2018.

It's located here
C:\Users\terry\My PSP8 Files\Scripts-Trusted\ss-mail-05-05.PspScript.
But after placing text and running the script it fails with 'Specifed Preset Shape not found'.

All my PSP 8 shapes are here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/aqopmeigm30qf ... r.jpg?dl=0
and I have added that location to PSP 2018's Preferences > File Locations > Preset Shapes
https://www.dropbox.com/s/66m7exvsgi0vy ... 1.jpg?dl=0

So why doesn't it work please?

I've uploaded the script here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/u5i7x5sjft2yd ... cript?dl=0

I then tested a much simpler PSP 8 script and that worked OK without change, so I'll upload that too:

Is the keyhole.pspshape file actually in that folder location? Keep in mind if it's a default shape you got with PSP8 then it would be located in PSP8's program files folder not in your personal preset shapes folder.

Thanks Levi!

I'd assumed it must be referring to one of those in the screenshot I included, mailslot.PspShape or MailSlotShape.pspshape. I had included the 'default' folder locations in the PSP 2018 Preferences and just added that new one. But I've now added the old Program Files folder too - and it worked :)

I'm puzzled about the duplication, given that it failed before adding the extra folder! What if anything should I delete?

Also I don't see why this folder was included on installation, as all its subfolders are empty:

Those folders, like your My PSP8 files folder are for things you've made. They are empty because you haven't made and saved any of your own resources.

Don't include the Program Files folder. As that will include everything in that folder, including all of the shapes that PSP2018 and PSP 8 still share. That's why you're getting the duplication notice. Just grab the mailslot files and move them into the preset shapes foldder for 2018. Then remove the program files folder from the list of folders.

Thanks Levi, I'll get onto that tomorrow.

One point on this that I'm still unclear about. Although It's hard to compare (because many of the 2018 folders don't have meaningful names anymore, just numbers but taking the example of one I did look at, Environment Maps, it would seem that unless I include the PSP 8 folder I;d have access to only 5 in PSP 2018, versus 53 in PSP 8?

https://www.dropbox.com/s/q4roxcssmoszm ... d.jpg?dl=0

A better example is Masks. (I actually use those occasionally, whereas I don't think I've ever knowingly used an 'Envoronment Map.) I see only 5 in PSP 2018 and scores in PSP 8.

Have you downloaded and installed any of the extras that come with PSP 2018? Usually upon registration they offer you a creative pack download (different from the one provided by 2018 Ultimate) which includes a few extra things. Not many.

What you can do with the PSP8 stuff is copy those into your personal resources folder for the ones you don't have in PSP2018, but only the ones you don't have otherwise you'll get those duplication notices.

As for the duplication notices, you only get them once when new duplicates are added, and you can save the notice info for later reference if you want to take time to delete the duplicates. More often than not the duplicates don't actually take up much disc space and don't hurt anything in my experience.
