Frame X is unreadable

Post by chillpenguin »

I've downloaded the trial of Corel VideoStudio X10 and have run into several problems.

My PC has a Core i5 2500K 3.3Ghz, 16GB RAM, 8GB RX 480 and running 64-bit Windows 10.

My primary goal is to take video captured from an Xbox One X and edit them. The X1X creates MP4s at either:
  • 1920x1080 at 29.97 FPS
  • 3840x2160 at 60 FPS
VideoStudio will allow me to add the lower res video to a project and edit it, but when attempting to render using any output type (e.g., AVI) it will always throw the "Frame X is unreadable" error. The frame changes from project to project. Sometimes it is 0, sometimes the last frame, sometimes a random frame in the middle. It is worthwhile to note that when using the MPEG-4 export type, it always reminds me that "This format is only supported in Win7, Win8 or Win10" before telling me about the unreadable frame.

VideoStudio will only allow me to import the higher res video into a project as an audio file. I have not figured out how to get it to except a 4K video file. It is my preference to work with at the higher resolution.

I also attempted to use MP4s created from my PC:
  • 1920x1080 at 29.99 FPS
Same as above. MPEG-4 reminds me about Windows versions, then throws a frame error. AVI and WMV just fail with the frame error.

So then I captured video of myself using my webcam, which produced a 1920x1080 15.56FPS MP4. Unreadable frame error.

I have found a single video file that works so far, a three-year-old webcam shot that is a 1920x1080 15.60 FPS MP4. Not sure why.

Finally, I tried a video shot on my Android phone. 1920x1080 29.67 FPS MP4. Unreadable frame error. However, it did export to WMV.

To be clear, every video I have tried is not only playable using Win10's built-in Photos and Movies & TV apps, but the Photos app can also edit these videos as well as export them.

The common thread here is MP4 files. VideoStudio won't read 4K versions properly, and refuses to export using that format. AVI mostly failed as well, with WMV giving me a single success. I didn't try the other formats because they are locked behind a paywall.

What am I missing here? Does VideoStudio X10 not work with MP4s or videos in 4K resolution? My computer meets the requirements of the program.

The trial version is so severely crippled that most of the functions you require are not available, how Corel expect potential purchasers to evaluate the program when only basic standard def video can be used.

The full version is capable of completing the tasks you require but the only way to confirm this is to purchase the program, carry out your evaluation then if the program is not suitable for your needs, obtain a refund, you have 30 days to claim a refund which should give you sufficient time

Thanks for that RobertOZ. That's pretty unfortunate - I would expect the program to tell me that such a feature is locked out during the trial, not just throw an error.

Hi

I would suspect either the codec used by the Xbox
Then your video frame rates seem to indicate a variable frame rate, video editors do not cope with variable frame rates that well. You mention 29.99 and 29.96 from the android again indicates a variable rate. Generally we would look for a constant rate of 29.97fps/30fps/25fps

The errors we receive do not always explain the problem, unreadable frame of 2354 for instance may refer to the number or frames in the clip, and not a single frame.

Personally I think you will have the same issues using the full purchased version, but I guess worth a try.

Consider using a video converter to render to a more editable rate 29.97 Mpeg4
Many on the forum use a free program called Format Factory, take care when installing to disable any extras it tries to install.

Thanks for the advice lata. I'd much rather set a constant framerate with the device taking the video than being forced to take an extra step with every video I import into VideoStudio, but I suppose I could live with that. I'll give the utility you suggested a shot, thank you.
