Corel VideoStudio has stopped working

Post by SteveMartinUSA »

Greetings, why does VideoStudio crash when dragging an MP4 to the timeline? The issue happens with other types of files as well, but not all. My MP4s come direct from my Panasonic VS100, which is still a current model. I have two laptops with VideoStudio and the other does not crash. The machine that does crash is a company laptop that is heavily managed, and the Desktop is on a network share.

This board would not seem to let me upload a screen capture in WMV, MOV, anything > 2MB, or who knows what else. Anyway, the machine was just rebooted and VideoStudio opened fresh, and the only thing I did was drag a Panasonic VS100 MP4 from the file system to the timeline. A couple seconds later comes "Corel VideoStudio has stopped working"...

The extension mov is not allowed.
The extension WMV is not allowed.

Have you tried, instead of drag and drop, right clicking in the timeline and selecting Insert Video (or other media). You then navigate to the file folder and select the clip or clips you want to insert. Takes a few seconds longer than drag and drop, and drag and drop should work, but at least it should be a usable work-around. (And FWIW, I never use drag and drop. Just what I'm used to, I suppose...)

Hi brother Ken, thank you very much for your suggestion. I just tried that and it gives me the same "Corel VideoStudio has stopped working".

I'm sure it's something to do with the company laptop configuration, but Corel needs to fix their software nevertheless. I've changed all of the directories available in the preferences but for some reason Corel doesn't always honor those locations, for example when it creates time remapping files, and those seem to go to a subfolder of my desktop, which is on a network share.

Hi

It may be the network configuration that is causing the problems.
If you designate a folder to hold or save files, that folder must be available when you launch the program, and be in the same location / drive etc..

As far as I know the program is for home use and not designed to work over a network

I think you would have to contact Corel Support for their advice on networking.

Take care as the EULA only allows the installation of Video Studio on one computer, unless the original computer is faulty, I guess that is why networking could be a no no for VS?.

Some MP4 and Mov files do require the QuickTime codec, would that be installed on the work pc?

Do I just install Quicktime to get their codec, and will VideoStudio use that codec or one that's installed with VideoStudio? Because I've had problems getting my MOV files to play on my new Sony TV.

I just installed quicktime 7 but I still get the crash. I can see it added to the end of my Path "C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\QTSystem\", but I haven't rebooted yet.

You should only install the codec and not the player
There was a security issue regarding the web player, Apple no longer support QuickTime

View You Tube for info on installing the Codec

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lDOgqO_fVk&t

As your other pc's do no crash using the same files it does appear that networking may be affecting this.
Maybe more stricter security settings on the works computer? Just thinking out loud??

I watched the video and did the custom install--thank you. I didn't have Quicktime but I still had MOV as an option on my "Share" tab. Why do I need the MOV codec in the old QuickTime installer, when the most recent date on the apple site is 6/2016? X10.5 is more recent than that... I wonder if this means the MOV format is on its way out, which is the built-in format of my cameras.

It can be confusing trying to pick the right format settings in the "share" tab. I do a lot of trial and error, but just because something works doesn't mean I know anything, like why would I use MP4 vs MOV (other than MP4 is smaller). Why is WMV smaller and clearer than MP2/MP4. YouTube takes H265 but my TV only plays H264. Why can't I use "Batch Convert" on an M2T file that VideoStudio generated, when do we use M2t, Etc. Holy cow.

Hi Guys

I am having the same issue except its from a certain camera.
I have a Panasonic Lumix FZ2500 and when I try to import files I have the same error and VS crashes.
I can import files from other devices gopro smartphone etc but not my Lumix.

This is quite strange because I have in the past successfully imported files from the Lumix.
Its only now I am having issues

Any thoughts?

Cheers
