Re: PSP X9 slow start
While it appears that Windows 10 updates are at least a large part of all of these complaints, there is no way Microsoft is going to change its procedure or take into account the issues that they might create. So I suggest that the best option - longer term of course - is for everyone who has these issues complain to Corel to try to get them to prioritize their updates to address the issues caused by the Windows updates. If Corel gets bombarded by a lot of complaints it might help to get them moving on the issue. There hasn't been a PSP 2018 update in awhile, perhaps because they are concentrating on PSP 2019, but this seems like an issue they will have even with their next PSP release so they should get on it first IMHO. With so many people migrating to Windows 10 Corel is going to start losing a lot of customers and stop gaining new ones as knowledge about these slowdowns becomes more wide spread.

Re: PSP X9 slow start
Interesting...jimbeaux wrote:Thanks. But, the slow down issues I see with x9 started last December with the Windows 10 Fall Creators update -- before the Intel processor patch. I have tried the Defender cloud option with no change in startup speed. Along with everything else I've read here on the forums (cleaning out temp folders / rebuild PSP databases / uninstall - reinstall x9 / try 32bit instead of 64bit / etc. ALL still result in an approximate 5 minute start time verses 5 seconds before the Fall Creators update.
I have noticed nothing direct after the update last year.
The KB4056892 is from 3.1., installed here at 6.1..
Same day i had installed my little Wacom ctl-480 (my son had it a few years in use), and the "perfectly clear" from the PSP X9...
This MAY be the period of time since PSP loads long(er).
Thought one of this was the problem first.
I think JoeB is right - one has to report it corel and microsoft...

My setup also and, IMHO, that combination of specific software is likely the best available that does the job effectively and without undue resource use or undue interference with one's computing/internet experience.hartpaul wrote:I also have turned off Defender. Where should one go to complain to Corel, and that it will be taken seriously?

While I don't have the link to it at hand, one place that gets a fair amount of attention and which is also monitored by at least somebody at Corel is their Facebook page. A lot of complaints there is likely to make more of an impact than the normal Contact Corel route or Tech Support, although I would suggest using all available methods to get the point across about how serious this issue is becoming.cronos42 wrote:Where should one go to complain to Corel, and that it will be taken seriously?

Please see http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=63104 where a member of the Corel PSP development team reports that they are working on a temporary fix since they believe 99% that MS is the problem here. He also adds that a longer term solution will require the cooperation of Microsoft.

Re: PSP X9 slow start
Just to let everybody know, this is not just a Windows 10 issue. I'm running Windows 7 and the slow start of X9 started about a month ago for me. No major changes made to my pc. I have tried all of the mentioned solutions, including a complete uninstall and reinstall. I originally had both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions installed. Opted for just the 32 bit version for my reinstall. Funny, after my reinstall yesterday, it fired up just fine on multiple launches. Tried it today, back to over 3 minutes to load (the first launch). Subsequent launches have been fine. I have no doubt though that tomorrow I'll be back to reading a novel while I wait for PSP to do its thing.
I was actually starting to entertain the notion that maybe Corel built a time bomb into X9 to force an upgrade to version 2018. But I see in this thread that people are having the same problem with the new version. Still don't think it's anything to do with Windows 10 though.

Re: PSP X9 slow start
No plot by Corel- more than likely the .net framework updates for Windows 7 the second Tuesday of January. I didn't install them and no slowdowns. If you did, uninstall or System Restore. Could also be the Specter patch, news that Microsoft issued an update to remove it due to problems-

Re: PSP X9 slow start
Thanks for the feedback, but the framework updates are not the problem. I had installed the latest updates for it, but then I uninstalled them. No dice. I even went as far as uninstalling framework 4.7.1 completely. As I understand it, that leaves version 3.5 that is embedded in the OS. Still no good. Then I installed version 4.6.2 (downloadable from Microsoft). No change. Since I ruled out 4.7.1 being the problem, I'm back at that version now.
I had not even heard of the Spectre 2 patch (KB4078130), until you mentioned it (thanks for the link). I had not installed that, so that's also not the problem. Have not done any Intel firmware updates either.
At this point I'm all out of ideas.

Do you think that you could please complete the profile information for this forum with more information about your computer specs and PSP versions you use? We use that information when people post with problems to help us determine whether or not - based on previous issues - the answers we give might be related to specific systems. Otherwise we end up having to post unnecessary questions asking for that information to make sure we are giving our best informed answers.brujo wrote:Thanks for the feedback,....

Re: PSP X9 slow start
Hi Brujo, I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. My PaintShop Pro of choice is X9. (64bit and 32bit) The 64bit PSPX9 handles many more open photos than the 32bit version. The only time my PaintShop is slow to start is if I do not let my computer settle down after booting. I have Windows Auto Update disabled and Spectrum Security Suite Installed. Spectrum Security Suite can take as much as four minutes to completely setup after my desktop is ready to use. (Very high disk usage) If I try to run anytime while my disk activity light is still on steady, it will be very slow starting and running. This includes PSPX9. If I wait for my computer to steady out my first startup of PSPX9 is under 25 seconds. Following startups of PSPX9 are under 10 seconds. I usually start in edit mode. I have Navigation set to Computer. I do not use any of PaintShop tagging features. You can use (Cntr-Alt-Delete) Windows 7 Task Manager > Resource Monitor > Disk tab to check your disk activity.
I hope this helps, Regards Charlie

Thanks, Charlie. Right now I just have 32 bit PSP installed (as noted earlier). That's fine, because I'm not worried about working on lots of photos at once. Plus, my old(er) Canon flatbed scanner will only work with the 32 bit version anyway.
I understand about letting the pc "settle down," and am careful to take that into consideration. The problem with PSP persists even with little to no disk or CPU activity. Sounds like we have pretty much the same preferences set; start in edit mode, navigation, etc. I also have Windows auto update disabled.
I have used PSP for years (since back when it was not really much more than MS Paint!). I've skipped some versions along the way, and have had version X9 since it came out. This problem started suddenly about a month ago with no changes (software or otherwise) to my computer that I can think of. A simple online search shows me I'm not alone with this problem. I don't think a definitive resolution has been achieved yet.

By the way... I just received another Windows Defender warning 'Win32/Lodi" about a Corel program. So I guess that's at least part of the recent issues with Corel products...
