WinDV keeps crashing
I'm trying to get my old Hi8 tapes in digital form on my computer. I've used WinDV before with my Sony camera hooked up to my Canon HV40 as a pass through AV to DV. It's been several years since I've tried this but now every time I start to capture it stops and says WinDv has stopped working and needs to close. Is there any way to fix this?

Re: WinDV keeps crashing
WinDV is not a Corel product, so we can't really offer any explanations as to what might have gone wrong with it as a program. You might want to consider contacting its maker at windv@mourek.cz The website remains windv.mourek.cz
However, as an initial question, can we assume you are connecting your Canon HV40 to your computer via a Firewire cable? WinDV requires that to work properly, though unfortunately few if any recent computers come with a Firewire port... I keep two older computers alive simply because they both have Firewire, and I still regularly use as Canon HV20...
One other possibility is that your problem might have been caused by Microsoft updating its Firewire driver. If so you might need to roll back the driver to a legacy one. Here's how:
1- Open Control Panel > Device Manager
2- Expand the "IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers" node in the device tree by double clicking.
3- Select the Driver tab and the click the Update driver button.
4- Select "Browse my computer for driver software"
5- Select "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer ..." and Check the box before “Show compatible hardware”.
6. Choose the second option--- "1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)", and click Next to update the driver.
