Hello,
I just registered again, as all my information had changed since I last actively participated in the forum. To date, I have gotten by with my old version of Video Studio Pro X4, but I am ready to upgrade to X10, as I plan to again be creating more videos.
“VOB” – My topic today.
Although I did search for the term ‘VOB’, and found many threads and posts, none quite answered the question I have, or at least I did not find it.
With a Sanyo RFWZV475F DVD Recorder/VCR, I have been making DVD’s of old Hi8 and mini-DV cassettes – mostly videos are of giant scale R/C airplanes. After finalizing the DVD’s, they work fine others DVD players, and if on the computer, they automatically play with an HP player.
Looking at the files on the DVD’s with the explorer, each video segment includes several small files, and a much larger file with the extension VOB. These VOB are not recognized by the Windows Media Player, or by my Corel Video Studio X4. After lots of reading on different ways to change these VOB files, I decided to try an option that seemed easy enough; i.e., I copied the VOB files to a different folder, and renamed the VOB extensions to MPG.
With the MPG extension, the videos now play fine with the Windows Media Player, and the VS X4 loads them; however, it does not handle them well. The VS plays just portions of the newly renamed files, and does not display the time line as with a normal video.
Is there a way to convert the VOB video files such that the VS X4 will use them properly? Would the newer VS X10 be able to do it as they are; that is, simply renamed with the MPG extension?
Thank you so much for your help!
Nando

Re: VOB video files
All versions of Video Studio since around VS7 (without the X!) have a method of importing the video from a DVD which converts the vob to mpg but does so in a more usable manner. Unfortunately, I don't have X4 so can't confirm the actual name of the command. But in more recent versions you can go to the Capture tab and choose the option there which is labelled "Import from Digital Media". So look for something along those lines.
A page should open allowing you to navigate to the drive where the DVD is sitting. You select that and it brings up a file tree structure of what is on the disc. You select the video you want by ticking a tiny (almost invisible!) box in the top right (I think) of each box shown on that screen.

Re: VOB video files
Ken,
I was ready to order VS10 from Amazon, but noticed that all the versions they offer, 8, 9, & 10 have the 'X', as in X8, X9. and X10.
Since you specified "(without the X)", I wondered if this VS Ultimate X10 be OK?
Also, is the VS Ultimate X10 operation similar, albeit with more features, as VS Pro X4?
Thanks for your prompt reply!

Re: VOB video files
Hi Alex
I have version X5 installed and the option to import from a DVD uses Insert Digital Media, I assume X4 will be the same. Files will be imported as Mpeg2
Read this web page that describes the process.

Re: VOB video files
Hi Nando!
The X is simply Corel's "cute" way of adding '10' to the version number. So when I say VS 7 I mean 7. When I say X7 I mean (Latin) 10 + 7 = 17. So your version X4 is 10 + 4 = 14. And the current version X10 is 10 + 10 = 20.
As I said above, it has been a very long time (6 years) since I used X4 and abit less since I had it on my computer. The basic operation is much the same though some small things operate a bit differently. At least you can download the trial version to see the big things -- though I have to say Corel have lost the plot with trial versions and have crippled almost everything in it so that it is difficult to say it demonstrates much at all.

Re: VOB video files
Try this program to convert vob to mpg safely: https://www.videohelp.com/software/DVDVob2Mpg
It is free and works just fine. I have used it often. Most of the time just changing the extension to mpg
does it but, this does it better.

Re: VOB video files
I used the Insert Digital Media method, and it worked! Thank you- It is a bit convoluted how it names the sections or chapters, but I was able to used it OK.
I ordered the X10, and I am looking forward to it.
Now I am trying to figure out how to slow the scrolling of the text I added at the beginning . . .
Thx!

Re: VOB video files
Hi Alex
Insert Digital Media lists the titles and any chapters, selecting both will effectively import two copies of the video, I usually only select Titles.
Text speed is associated with the clips duration, by default I believe that is 3 seconds, can be changed in Preferences (F6)
From the timeline, select the clip, drag the ends to stretch the clip increasing the duration.
Or double click the clip to open Options panel – Edit tab – Set the digital clock
