Resized Photo Quality

Post by Clark Griswalter »

I have a nice collection of coasters as a result of trying to improve the quality of photos in a video I created. This seems like it should be simple, but I'm struggling. I have a Blu Ray burner on order, so I'm currently working in the DVD format. I'm adding multiple photos to the screen at a time. Each takes up less than a quarter of the screen. The original photos are 12 MP. I've noticed that in the preview window, they appear heavily pixelated, but when I pause the playback, they clear up. No such luck on burned DVDs--they look awful (thus the coasters). I've tried manually downsizing the photos so VS didn't have to shrink them. I've also tried changing the photo format to TIFF. Nothing works. My DVD settings are as follows:
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Clark

And welcome to the forums

I am not on my pc so cannot run video studio to check settings

But first stop burning a disc, choose to create an Iso file, that creates a file on our pc, we can play using vlc media player to check quality
After completing your project, render to mpeg2.
Then use that video to burn to disc, do not burn the project file

Ok..... some things to try in creating slide shows,

set frame order to use progressive aka frame based instead of interlaced.
F6 preferences edit tab - set resample quality to best
Consider burning a avchd discs, a hybrid disc, uses HD video size burnt to standard DVD

If you are viewing the DVD on HD TV with a large screen then the video will look poor quality

I assume the original images are jpeg, what size are they? Width x Height in px

Trevor,
Thanks for your reply. The original photos were in jpeg format, but I have also tried converting them to TIFFs. I have not tried PNG. Not sure if that would help. Regardless, my Blu Ray burner has arrived and I'm anxious to try burning one. If the quality is satisfactory, I will finish my project in full HD and worry about DVDs later. I have a new issue with audio that I will post separately.

Well, attempting to burn a blu-ray has introduced a whole new set of issues, but on a good note, I rendered the video in 1920x1080 and it looks great, at least on a computer screen!

Clark

When testing the Bluray discs you may be best to create a Bluray Folder. Saves on those coasters.
Then you can play the video file located in the Stream folder to check quality.

Please read
2 / Burn the disc from compliant video files – recommended
From http://lata.me.uk/corel/all.htm

Creating a slide show using still images may be best to use Progressive rather than Interlaced.
Unfortunately Bluray only supports Progressive when using a frame size 1280 x 720.

That's of course only progressive at 50p or 60p... You can burn a BD at 24p, 25p and 30p (or more accurately 29.97p) at 1920 x 1080 under the international Blu-Ray standard.

And as I have said in your other thread, like Trevor here, it's the top option (i.e. video output) Share > AVC/H.264.

Hi

Sorry I understood the Bluray standard to be 1920 x 1080 interlaced.
If that has changed then Video Studio is not keeping up with the changes.

Every time I try to burn a Bluray using progressive the program converts the title to use Interlacing, unless I use 1280 x 720 x 25P and create the video file first
I can also burn a 1920 x 1080 24P (23.976P) again must create the first video file.

Video Studio will not burn a 24P or 25P from the project timelines.
Those using NTSC may have their 24P projects converted to Pal, afaik, also creates an interlaced video using Lower Field and that’s bad.

You're quite right Trevor. I apologize. Oddly enough the BD standard *has* changed, but only to allow 50/60p in UHD/4K (3840 x 2160) video. See attached chart from Wikipedia.
