Can I render just a small part of my project?
I wish to render only a tiny part of my project on the timeline, not all of it, just a small segment from it's middle, but cannot recall how.

Hi, simply set the orange preview bar on that segment
And tick "create preview range only""

Re: Can I render just a small part of my project?
Thanks Trevor,
Was easier then I thought, thanks to your clear simple instructions.
Now another question. When I put the new "rendered" segment of my project on the timeline, and split it into individual scenes, I note that all the audio remains on the timeline with the image. When I now split the audio from image the audio appears on a separate audio track. But both music and narration are on same track together. So cannot edit just music alone or just the narration without affecting the music. Hmmm... so how do we divorce these two and put them on separate tracks? Regards, Mike

The music and narration were merged into one audio track when the video was created and cannot be separated.

Hmmm. Then may I add to our Corel wish list that when we render our project... or any part of it, that the rendering process does not merge our project's music and narration tracks together on to one audio track, leaving them inseparable and thus not editable. I mean... wasn't that the end purpose of their software, to allow us to edit our video and make last minute changes... both before and after its been rendered? Regards, Mike

Re: Can I render just a small part of my project?
FWIW I have always regarded the ability to render a small part of a project as being only a control tool i.e. to check how that part would like in final form. If I don't like something about it, then the full project is still there and can be further edited to fix what errors you may have detected in the small render.
Admittedly, Project playback is supposed to serve this control function, but as we all realize, Video Studio's playback mode can sometimes be erratic for reasons of computer specifications, video format etc. So the small part render gives us a more accurate idea of how specific parts will look in final form.
We also have to bear in mind we are talking about a pretty cheap piece of software. Yes, movie studios and production companies can produce DVDs and Blu-Ray discs which retain multiple layers of audio and video. But they spend millions to have the necessary equipment and software in order to be able to do so. Home video like ours is in another ball park altogether and on the other side of the tracks to boot!

Re: Can I render just a small part of my project?
Working on a 2 hour documentary. It seemed to me that after rendering it, if I see that I need to make one more small change in narration or music volume, I could more easily do that if I still had control over them, then to have to render a film this length over again. I could also more easily edit parts from my past rendered projects into my present project. And I could also render and remove parts from my present project and easily edit them into my future projects. I find that important. Just a thought. I mean, if Corel can make such a change, where I will still have control over music and narration after rendering... GREAT! If they can't, maybe in the future. Regards, Mike

Re: Can I render just a small part of my project?
As far as I know there is no user video editing program with which you render a project to a video file and afterwards be able to separate the music and narration tracks to make editing changes. All the audio tracks (just like the video tracks" are merged into one video and one audio track.
I would never even consider working on a 2 hour video in one project. It is much easier to break up such a project into smaller projects of say 15 minutes. The various projects can easily be combined to create the final project

Hi Mike
Your original post asked “I wish to render only a tiny part of my project on the timeline, not all of it, just a small segment from it's middle, but cannot recall how.”
The point of rendering our project is to combine all timelines into one video file, whether that be the entire project or a Project Range.
The only issue would occur when rendering to replace a range.
Now you can disable tracks by clicking the icon left of timelines (float the mouse for a tool tip)
Only active tracks will be rendered.
So I guess that’s the option you needed to use.

Re: Can I render just a small part of my project?
Thanks, Trevor, that helped me better understand purpose of rendering. And yes, it seems I can easily work around the problem I mentioned, by disabling the music track before I render project. Regards, MIke

Disabling tracks is the procedure I do in order to make a "clean" text-less version that a different language can be titled in the future.Mike Warren wrote:Thanks, Trevor, that helped me better understand purpose of rendering. Re: Can I render just a small part of my project?
Thanks Asik, that's also a good idea. I also hope to do the same in near future, having my documentary translated to another language like Spanish. I personally find being able to disable tracks one of the best and most versatile features in this video editing software. Use it all the time. Regards, Mike
