Does the Trial version of Corel VideoStudio x10 not capture?
Trying before buying. Try to capture but failing. The PC can control the Canon camera, when I select capture the camera starts and I see video and audio o the camera, but nothing on the PC Capture window. The camera is Xh A1 camera. It shows up in the Information bar only as a 720 x 576, Type -1 NTSC yet I know this is a 1440 x 1024 camera . Is all this because I am using the trial version? Keep in mid that the PC shows no video and presents no audio during the capture. And withinin 5 seconds of trying to capture, I get an error "Capture Failed. The file created is corrupted and unusable. It will be automatically be deleted.

Can we assume you have the Canon connected via IEEE1394/Firewire? And I don't know what other software you might have, but I usually capture my HDV using a small freeware application called HDVSplit (though that's because it allows me to name the incoming files rather than using VS's date/time naming system). Does that or any other software capable of capturing DV/HDV work?

Yes, 1384 to the PC and Yes the PC can control the camera but does not capture. I will try to download and use HDSplit and let you know. So, are you saying that VS Trial does allow capture?

Re: Does the Trial version of Corel VideoStudio x10 not capt
Hi
The trial is a limited version, many features have been disabled, the Project Properties are limited to standard definition 720 x 576, it could be that which is showing via capture.
So yes it could be the trials limitations on handling HD, to be honest I just do not know and cannot install the trial to test.
Corel Support may be able to answer that, I would think Kens recommendation is the best option, HDVSplit.

Re: Does the Trial version of Corel VideoStudio x10 not capt
thank you to both of you. Corel finally did reply and told me capture is disabled in the trial version - but the app does not complain that it is disabled; it just does not work. Poor planning on their part. Thanks for the input on HDVSplit - I loaded that, then it needed missing codecs. I loaded that and could play the camera fine and say & heard the playback. I could not capture for some other reason I have yet to determine. Eventually I will by VS and capture with it - unless HDVSplit is higher resolution or better audio - any thoughts on that?

Ken is your man for HDVSplit, as far as I know he uses that to capture his HD video
He is in NZ so will be early morning over there

If you are having trouble even with HDVSplit, it seems to me that has been caused by Microsoft updating its Firewire driver. So you need to roll back the driver to a legacy one. Here's how:
1- Open Control Panel > Device Manager
2- Expand the "IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers" node in the device tree by double clicking.
3- Select the Driver tab and the click the Update driver button.
4- Select "Browse my computer for driver software"
5- Select "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer ..." and Check the box before “Show compatible hardware”.
6. Choose the second option--- "1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)", and click Next to update the driver.
As for HDVSplit possibly being of higher quality, it is not. HDV video, like DV video, is captured in real time i.e. it takes one hour to download one hour of video. It is in reality transferred frame by frame in exactly the same quality as on the original tape. So the end quality of the capture from HDVSplit is exactly the same as from VS. As I indicated above, though, HDVSplit has the (to me at least) significant advantage of allowing you to assign your own name to the video as it is being captured. The VS capture system, on the other hand, uses what appears to be a rather arcane numbering system which is in fact based on time and date but gives no real clue to what is on the video.
