Layer Link Toggle

Post by SheriLynn »

From PSP vX, I was able to easily group layers to move together. I don't see it in PSP 2018. Can someone please tell me what it has been replaced with?

The button still looks like a chain link, it just doesn't show numbers anymore. Prior to X4 you could only select one raster layer at a time so you could hit that button until you got the link level you wanted. Now in versions after X4 you can select mulitple raster layers with Ctrl + Clicking on layers or after X6 Shift + Clicking to quickly select multiple layers. Once all of the layers you want are selected. Hit the chain link button and they'll all be linked together.

To add a layer to a current link set, select at least one layer in the linkset and the layer you want to add, then hit the chanlink button.

To remove a layer from a link set, select the layer and click the chainlink button.

If you select two layers from different linksets and hit the chainlink button both layers will be removed from their respective linksets.

And of course you can change the linkset through the layer properties. Or by turning off the layer's current linkset and then adding it to another linkset as defined above.

Linksets and Layer groups are different. All layers in a layer group are added to their own linkset so that when you use the move tool the whole group moves together. However, layer groups act as a single layer, only interacting with each other. A linkset lets you move layers as a group without the layers having to be physically separated from the rest of the image or stacked right on top of each other. Which is why I imagine they want linksets over layer groups.

LeviFiction, thank you for this clear explanation. Not having upgraded from vX to another release for years, I'm astounded at the things I have to re-learn. You are all so helpful and patient and I do appreciate it.

I had discovered the 'group' interaction with the other layers before your explanation of the layer link toggle. I was ungrouping layers to insert another layer between the two. I have never really understood 'group' before and I don't think I ever used it. I just used the layer link toggle and that worked for me. Now I'm off to explore 'groups' and see now to use it.

Thanks again for your expert knowledge. This PSP 2018 newbie appreciates it!

I could be wrong but I suspect he was referring to the workspace colors you use which are somewhat more vivid than most. :-)

lol, true. I do miss being able to use System colors or customize from the grey workspace/background in 2018. But I'm getting used to it.
