Chroma key, magic pink just a waste of time?

Post by MikesMovies »

Hi everyone, could use your help here.

I read that magic pink chroma screen would be great, I do lots of model railway videos and most colours are used on them other than pink, so I thought I’d be onto a winner.
I adjusted VS x10 and even added the extra chroma key effect to try and improve things, but as you will see it’s horrid.

Could anyone tell me what I am doing wrong, or is magic pink, just a magic stink :(

Happy new year by the way :)

Never heard about magic pink, maybe 30 years in video isn't enough.
The key color should be the most opposite (180 degrees) of the major colors in the shot.
If you can direct us where you read about the magic maybe we will eat our hats.

Hi,
Just a couple of possibilities from someone who shoots quite a bit of keyed video. Your backdrop seems to have quite a few "hotspots" from the lighting so that it isn't uniformly lit. Your subject also seems a little too close to the background and so you are getting pink reflections on many of the edges. Are using using Videostudio's built in chromakeyer? If you have access to NewBlueFX Video Essentials VI plugins, within that package there is one called Chroma Key Pro. This may yield superior results. Bright green is usually best suited to keying due to the way consumer cameras process colour but I think you can definitely improve your results with your current "pink" setup. I'd like to see the finished clip! :D

You can see samples of Mike's finished videos on his youtube channel here - https://www.youtube.com/user/mikesndbs

we have discussed Chroma keying in Videostudio with Mike on here before and obtained many acceptable results

Mike has not explained where this 'Magic Pink' comes from here - but from my experience the pale pink Mike has used in the sample he posted is not a suitable colour at all - being so pale it almost matches a number or white / cream objects

Whatever colour you use Mike needs to be quite solid - remember originally we had to use a darkish green - which then progressed to dark blue and eventually to more or less any colour but I think the rule about being a solid 'dense' colour still applies - maybe a darker shade of pink would work

is this 'magic pink' a standalone programme - or just a colour you add yourself

Hi,
I think the reflections from the pink backdrop are causing the edge jitter and unwanted transparent sections. Moving the subject further away fron the backdrop can minimize this. Spill suppression can further improve your key. If you can't get the results you want from bulit in keyer you may already have an alternative. If you click on the FX tab and can see NewBlue Video Essentials II there is a Chroma Key plugin. No guarantees, but the "Erase Spill" control in this plugin has often helped me get a clean key on certain shots.
I hope this helps.
